Coinage of ICE
editJust a note from the subject about the claim on the Tom Maddox (stub) page. It contains this statement:
"Maddox coined the term Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics on Usenet."
That's not true. I coined the term in the manuscript of an unpublished story that he showed to William Gibson at a science fiction convention in Portland, Oregon. Gibson asked permission to "steal" the acronym, and I agreed and didn't think much more about it until Neuromancer was published, where I was acknowledged as the creator of ICE.

- Are you Tom Maddox? I'm a bit confused by your use of pronouns in the comment above. You wrote: "I coined the term in the manuscript of an unpublished story that he showed to William Gibson at a science fiction convention in Portland, Oregon." Who is "he" in that sentence?
Hi, oops, sorry about the pronoun confusion on the entry. I'm the guy all right. I'm not sure what the convention is here. Given that I was making a first-person claim, should it be "Tom Maddox says that he ..."? That would be fine. The main thing is, I didn't want to be vanity editing my own page, but I do have first-person knowledge of the statement. Not sure what to do about that. Thanks, Tom Tom Maddox 19:01, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Possible death
editA friend of Tom Maddox tweeted about his apparent death on October 18, 2022 at (1) Ellen Datlow on Twitter: "RIP Tom Maddox, a terrific writer of sf, a brilliant blues guitarist, and a good guy. Gone too soon. (He had a stroke a couple of weeks ago, died in his sleep the 18th)." / Twitter (https://twitter.com/EllenDatlow/status/1582906934721941504). I'm not aware of any credible sources confirming this, but given the source it seems probable. Llachglin (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- His brother has confirmed the news of his deatb to William Gibson -- Cimon Avaro; on a pogostick. (talk) 19:24, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
