Books

edit

The Exodus link should point to an article on the sci-fi book, not the biblical book. Sadly, I don't know what the sci-fi book's article's title would be. Also, what is the order of the books? I'd like to see more details about the books (largely because I read them separated by a few years in time, and that made them confusing --- I'd hoped Wikipedia could unconfuse me). Hmm... Based on vague memories of the books, the order seems to be

  1. ISW-4, against the Bugs
    1. In Death Ground
    2. The Shiva Option
  2. First Contact, against the Vestrii
    1. Crusade --- I think the beginning of this book involves Vestrii appearing for the first time, presumably with "the so-called "Sham Fleet" that the Vestrii presented to the Alliance upon their emergence from seclusion after ISW-4" [1] Thus, Crusade would seem to be after ISW-4

Keep in mind that I haven't ready any of these books except the first chapter of Crusade for a couple of years

Actually, I think Crusade must come before In Death Ground --- "this new missile with warp transit capability" (Crusade, chapter 9) sounds like the warp assault missiles from In Death Ground. The race in Crusade doesn't seem to be listed at the encyclopedia. Ealex292 07:57, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hah... That resolves it. From In Death Ground:

Tensions exist between the three groups of worlds, and are explored in the sequel, although published before any in the series, novel "Insurrection".) Following a series of four interstellar wars with different species (warlike feline Orions and their centauroid Gorm associates, birdlike Ophiuchi, genocidal Rigelians, and a weird Theban Jihad explored in a prequel novel Crusade), humanity has experienced a seventy-year "vacation from history".

Thus, the order is:

  1. Crusade
  2. In Death Ground and The Shiva Option
  3. Insurrection

The order you listed is the chronological order. Print order was Crusade, Insurrection, In Death Ground, The Shiva Option, and Exodus. Jbanes 16:37, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Crusade is about the war with the Thebans. They're a race that worshipped Earth ("Holy Terra"). When they finally emerged from the warp point they were located behind, they claimed that they were "Terrans", and ended up going to war with the infidel humans from Earth.
The Vestrii are tied to the Tangri Corsairs and the humans. The Tangri are a race that views all other races as non-sentients who mimic intelligence (apparently there are non-sentient creatures on their homeworld that do this, supporting the Tangri's views), and engage in piracy against the other various races. When the Vestrii arrived in our section of the galaxy, they were looking for a race that they could rely on as nominal friends. They decided that humans best fit the bill, and in order to demonstrate their own good intentions, the Vestrii went on a massive anti-Tangri campaign, systematically hunting down and destroying Tangri whenever the opportunity presented itself. The chastened Tangri got the other races to intercede with the Vestri on behalf of the Tangri (no one wanted another massive war so soon after ISW-4), and humanity officially ceded the former Arachnid and Rigellian worlds (which had been depopulated due to the two races' views on foreign relations) to the Vestrii.
Because Vestrii technology was so alien in comparison with the technology developed by the local races, the Vestrii built what was referred to as the "Sham Fleet". This was a fleet composed of ships built using local technology, and according to the Vestrii was built primarily to avoid scaring the locals with knowledge of just how powerful the Vestrii really were.
As the last Starfire product I ever saw was Alkelda Dawn, I don't know if anything further has been done with the Vestrii. As I last saw them, they seemed to be a generally well-meaning race that were primarily concerned with laying low from the alien conglomerate that had driven them from their original home. Alkelda Dawn mentioned a great secret that was revealed at the "Battle of Corcyra" (sp?), but provided no information on what that secret was. I have no idea if they've been touched on again, as they were at the far end of the Starfire timeline (though I think it's interesting to note that the two individuals featured on the cover of the box for the campaign rules for Starfire 3rd edition are a human and a Vestrii). --Junior612 02:23, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's probably worth noting that so far as I know, the novels have completely diverged from the history that incorporated the Tangri and Vestrii. The Tangri were never mentioned in the ISW-4 novels, and the brief plot synopsis that I read about the Exodus novel seems to suggest that no new races have been encountered since the Star Union was discovered during ISW-4. So in the novels there's no Tangri piracy, and no Vestrii Sham Fleet. --Junior612 23:16, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll have to re-read the novels (again), but I distinctly remeber Tangri piracy being mentioned. Nothing from Alkeda Dawn, however, has been mentioned in any of the five novels.Bengaley 14:48, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The races section should be restored, there are pages for the Vulcans and Klingons. 2600:6C55:7600:14C8:A95A:4912:752C:11D0 (talk) 03:08, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
