Moved from article:

Many people confuse the Spiritual Baptist religion with others. In Trinidad and Tobago the Spiritual Baptists may have kept some of their African Traditions, but it is all about Jesus Christ. Often Confused with the Shango Baptists, there is a key difference. The Shango Baptists are the same syncretic religion as Santeria, Macumba, Lukumi and Candomble, expect they lack the Spanish influence unlike these others.

This needs to be sourced and clarified. Guettarda 02:49, 9 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Request for advice about adding an eye-witness account

edit

A section I added some time ago on the Spiritual Baptists was removed - and, on consideration, I agree with the reasons given: "(non-verifiable event deleted referring to an event in 1950 and the sharing of rum during a ceremony)."

I wonder how others would feel if I included a modified short version of this paragraph if I make clear it is an eyewitness account?

I was taken several times to services by my father (who loved the singing - as did I) in the early to mid-1950s. My father (who was a doctor) had a couple of patients who were members of the group who invited us to attend and we were made very welcome (though I remember my father being asked not to bring a camera). I think an eye-witness account would add interest to the article. It was a memorable and very moving experience - one I frequently remember with fondness.

However, there are probably much better-qualified people than I to write this up. If so, it would be wonderful to have a good description of the services held under the spectacular Blue Basin waterfall.

If it offends people, I would leave out the mention of the bottle of rum being passed around during the ceremony - I am aware that this may be a sensitive issue, but it was certainly a feature of each of the services I attended. I am not sure how to handle this (or if I should at all) and would appreciate any comments. Sincerely, John Hill 10:23, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Blogs are for eye witness accounts. However adding them to an academic documents such as this gives the false impression that what you witnssed is the norm. If this was allowed case then a particular religion (RC) would have been defined by the number of pedophiles that keep showing up in their ranks. Think about it...

Thanks for clear honest advice

edit

I have taken on board the advice given above - and see the logic in your comments - so, of course, I will not be trying to add any eyewitness accounts in future (unless they can be backed up by other evidence). John Hill 22:36, 20 February 2007 (UTC) Bold text I am a Spiritual Baptist since forever I guess I am third or fourth generation of this faith. I love this faith because of the freedom that you have as a women or man to preach or assist with the services etc. The spiritual baptist (some churches ) also believe in the saints of God (The Virgin Mary, St. Jude , St. Matthew, St. John the Baptist Etc) We have the african drums in our church and we also do things for the less fortunate. I will disagree with the earlier writer who said that rum was passed around during service. You must admit that their are different types of spiritual baptist . The thought is different however the most important piece is that we knowledge the holy trinity. We also have other areas such as mournig were a person fast and prays in the church from 3-7 days according to their "charge'. However a lot of the rituals do indeed remind you of the Catholic religion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.112.105.136 (talk) 18:31, 10 July 2008 (UTC) Reply

Organisation, numbers
