Instructions are in the work title

edit

This skimpy article leaves out basic facts about the wall drawings: the are not executed by the artist. The complete instructions are in the work title, they are executed by others, left up for a time, and then painted over. Parting Thoughts From a Master of the Ephemeral, NYT, By ROBERTA SMITH Published: April 21, 2007: "BEACON, N.Y. — If the greatness of Sol LeWitt, the Minimal-Conceptual artist who died this month at 78, has so far escaped you, make haste to this quiet Hudson River town and its main cultural attraction, the massive art space called Dia:Beacon. Here, among the often hulking displays of Minimal Art, you’ll find an exhilarating show of 14 of LeWitt’s mind-teasing, eye-filling wall drawings. All were made by people other than the artist, following his written instructions — a habit that has always given LeWitt’s detractors fits..." [1] -69.87.202.190 12:55, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • If the article is "skimpy," you might consider adding to it. But please leave out Roberta Smith's gushing praise. That is over the top, in my opinion. Nothing in art gives anyone "fits," anymore, I don't think. And her allusions to Duchamp could put a chimpanzee to sleep. Could anyone in their right mind concur with Smith's assertion that, "LeWitt’s drawings brim with the fineness and foibles of the human condition?" Bus stop 14:02, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I wouldn't go that far. People still have fits over art. And it does, in fact remain controversial that LeWitt drawings are executed by others. NSpector (talk) 06:58, 21 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in Sol LeWitt

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Sol LeWitt's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "NewYork-AfterAndy-1990":

  • From Printed Matter, Inc: Smith, Dinitia (29 January 1990). "After Andy: Ingrid Sischy, Queen of the Downtown Art Scene, Takes over at Interview". New York. p. 48. Retrieved 25 July 2015.
  • From Ingrid Sischy: Smith, Dinitia (29 January 1990). "After Andy: Ingrid Sischy, Queen of the Downtown Art Scene, Takes over at Interview". New York. Retrieved 25 July 2015.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 06:39, 15 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wife, daughter?

edit

LeWitt was married to Carol Androgio. I believe they had a daughter.
