Lead
editThe opening sentence of the lead seems to be confusing and could be worked on to help provide additional clarification. Jfer12 (talk) 06:06, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
- I changed it up a little but would be happy to take any feedback! Rdatwan1 (talk) 18:09, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

editThere is a different, more general approach with similar name presented by Fodor in his book Self-expansion. www.psy2.org It introduces also the notion of Self-narrowing. The model is described on http://www.psy2.org/index.php?n=Psy2.Fipp
There might be worth considering mentioning these information in the article and adding the book as a reference.
Added a couple of sentences with citations to Measuring Inclusion of the Other in the Self section. This expands the section to include additional/adapted measures of the IOS based on the traditional IOS scale including the Continuous IOS applet[1] and the Inclusion of Community in the Self Scale.[2] Glorytohypnotoad (talk) 20:26, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
Added a small section to reflect recent developments in self-expansion research, particularly in regards to extending it beyond the social sphere. Glorytohypnotoad (talk) 17:49, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

editA number of sentences are intriguing but do not have accompanying citations (for example, "It has been suggested that when a person is socially stable, self-expansion via an outgroup member is most likely to be successful"). This is perhaps true, but it would greatly benefit readers if the source from which this was taken was referenced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Equilibriation (talk • contribs) 10:23, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
Added a reference to the Self-expansion Motivation section to address this comment by Equilibriation. [3] Glorytohypnotoad (talk) 20:52, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- Not only would this article benefit from references accompanying some of the sentences, but more secondary and tertiary sources are needed as well. This article appears to have most of its references come from empirical research/primary sources. Reids0124 (talk) 02:28, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Wiki Education assignment: Communication Theory and Frameworks - Peer Review
editIn reviewing this article for an academic course, I have two main points of feedback for better representation of the theory: better representation of the aspect of relational maintenance in self-expansion theory and re-format the current information to better facilitate a clear understanding of the application of the model of self-expansion.
As the article is currently written, there is a lot of information and references on the model, but the presentation of this information is not clear and concise. The lead of the article, as mentioned by others in the talk section, is confusing and does not adequately represent the theory as being grounded in relational maintenance. Framing the theory in this lens would give readers a more thorough understanding of the concepts that developed this framework and give them a clearer understanding of the evolution and application of this theory as later presented in the article.
Reformatting the article in the following ways would make the information easier to understand:
Develop an ‘Overview’ section where the current sections on ‘Motivational Principle’ and ‘Inclusion-of-other-in-the self Principle’ can be subsections. These two core concepts do not need to be separate, as they are both foundational to the theory and were developed by the same researchers. This would show better the evolution of the development of the concept into theory and the different applications as mentioned below.
Secondly, to reformat the current subsections on ‘ingroup,’ ‘inter-group relations,’ and ‘interpersonal relationships.’ The order of subsections is as noted below, but would be better presented if in the following order: ‘interpersonal relationships,’ ‘ingroup,’ and ‘inter-group relations.’ This formatting edit may seem non-consequential, but the evolution of the application of the theory from self, to other, to group, to inter-group is a more natural progression of the externalization factor of this theory than the current presentation.
These subsections should also be edited for brevity as the current style is more conducive to academic writing goals than general public understanding. Additionally, many of the citations for these last sections are the same few references and therefore should be able to be presented more briefly. There are also a few sentences that should have references but do not and can be eliminated from the article. For example, there are many sentences that begin with phrases such as “It has been suggested...” and “It has been proposed..” that do not have citations for these claims.
Lastly, there is one aspect of the theory that is missed in this article: the element of equity in relational maintenance and its impact on self-expansion as studied by researchers Katherine Forsythe and Andrew Ledbetter. This evolution of research on self-expansion added an important element to understanding self expansion theory in relational maintenance and would be valuable to add in the section on interpersonal relationships.
