USGS says "Sawatch", and Google agrees by about 80-to-1. Stan 03:42, 20 May 2004 (UTC)Reply

Inconsistent Naming

edit

The title of the article and most of the content uses "Sawatch" as the name of the range, but the lead and the title of the infobox use "Saguache". There's a footnote that notes that "Saguache" is pronounced the same as "Sawatch", but doesn't explain the two different written versions of the name. I'm going to be bold and assume that "Saguache" is a valid alternative name, less commonly used currently, and as such change the headings to "Sawatch" for consistency and add a note about the alternate name in the lead. Please update and/or comment here if that's incorrect. Khromegnome (talk) 13:48, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

So People can't pronounce Saguache
As it is spelled.
(Sa-watch) is the way it is sounded out. 2600:100E:B047:6992:E0BA:882D:1DF9:3D92 (talk) 12:27, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Castle Peak

edit

It is unclear whether Castle Peak (11er, not to be confused with the 14er in the Elk Range) should be considered part of the Sawatch Range. It was probably included because geographically, it is straight north of the rest of the range. However, looking at its parent lineage on lists of john (https://listsofjohn.com/lineage/2217), the path of least descent from castle peak to the Sawatch range takes you over two other major ranges: the Gore Range and then the Mosquito/Tenmile range. Given that Castle peak has over 3,000 ft. of prominence (more than Mt. Powell, the highest peak in the Gore Range), I do not think it makes sense to call it part of the Gore Range either. Additionally, it is separated from the rest of the Sawatch Range by the Colorado River. I do no know if there is a consistent definition of mountain range on Wikipedia that should be applied here. Perhaps the best solution is to add a note to the table that says "Castle Peak may not be part of the Sawatch Range if considering parent lineage". 2601:285:200:FC70:C19C:E097:9240:339D (talk) 21:43, 28 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
