The other articles on Italian basilicas use their proper Italian names because they are known by their Italian names, even by English-speaking people: Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, Basilica Palladiana, Basilica della Santissima Annunziata di Firenze, Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze, Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, Basilica di San Zanipolo, Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze, Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. That establishes precedence to move this article to the proper title with a redirect from its more uncommonly used English translation. --Gerald Farinas 18:23, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

San Lorenzo and a Letter from Gregory the Great?

edit

Are the deaths of the seven workers who accidentally saw the body of St. Lawrence according to a letter from Gregory the Great to the Empress Constantina related to Pelagius's work with San Lorenzo fuori le Mura? The letter in question merely suggests that Pelagius had ordered "improvements" to be made when the accident occurred and the workers died. 128.6.30.197 (talk) 05:17, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Minor basilica

edit

Why was this basilica "demoted" to a minor basilica? Many of the basilica articles relating to the Pope mention this basilica, but not why it is no longer part of the Pentarchy (even Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem does not mention it). What happened, when and why? 71.234.215.133 (talk) 11:09, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Until Benedict XVI, there were 4 major basilicas. All the others were ipso facto "minor basilicas". Benedict XVI’s theological act of renouncing the title of "Patriarch of the West" had as consequence that Roman Catholic patriarchal basilicas are today officially known as Papal (Major or Minor) basilicas. In the case of San Lorenzo, it should read "Papal minor basilica" as strict denomination. See here for a full list: [1]. I modified the page accordingly. Pope St. Hilary

edit

In the article on Pope St. Hilary it is mentioned that he is buried in this church. If this is so, shouldn't this be mentioned in the section on burials? Caeruleancentaur (talk) 12:43, 28 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the WallsSan Lorenzo fuori le Mura – The article on almost every other basilica in Rome uses the Italian name. I can't see that this basilica is referred to by its English name any more than any other Roman basilica is. Most modern guidebooks use the Italian name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:05, 16 August 2018 (UTC)--Relisting. Dekimasuよ! 01:18, 25 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
