Chemical Works
editQuote from Yorkshire Post
edit""BP ready to sell chemicals business by Alexandra Wood
DOZENS of workers at the BP plant at Saltend, in Hull, face an uncertain future after the company announced two of its manufacturing units are up for sale. The decision to sell its ethyl acetate (ETAC) and vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) manufacturing units follows a review which concluded that the Saltend site would focus on its existing acetic acid and acetic anhydride businesses.About 40 staff are affected, including process technicians and engineers, who were told of the decision yesterday morning.BP said it hoped the business would be sold as a going concern, with workers transferring across to a new employer. No redundancy notices have been issued. The units, which manufacture ETAC used in printing inks, glues, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and VAM which is used in paint, floor coverings and clothing, were only commissioned in 2000/2001.As part of the same review, BP is proposing to relocate all commercial roles in the European region of its acetyls business from its offices in Sunbury-on-Thames, Middlesex. The move is expected to create more than 30 commercial roles at the Saltend site, the largest producer of acetic acid in Europe.Guy Moeyens, the business unit leader of BP Acetyls pledged to keep staff, customers, suppliers and contractors informed of developments. He added: "We will continue to develop world-class technology in acetic acid and acetic anhydride using our research and manufacturing facilities at Saltend."About 400 people work at the Saltend manufacturing site with a further 185 employed at the research and technology centre.
