His name

"Ryokū" is definitely inadequate. We Japanese don't prounce "Ryokū" but "Ryoku-u" in his case. I think this article should be moved to Saitō Ryokuu or back to Saito Ryokuu.--miya (talk) 00:15, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Romanization should be done one KANJI at a time:

斎藤緑雨 --- 斎(=sai) 藤(=tō), 緑(=ryoku) 雨(=u) =Saitō Ryokuu

That sounds correct to me - it makes more sense to romanize kanji-by-kanji, but then again I haven't been studying Japanese for all that long so I don't know what the academic standards for this are. However, both Aozora and EDICT list his given name as "Ryokuu". Oddly enough, they both also list his birthdate as January 1, 1868 - I wonder if the Japanese article has it wrong, or those two have it wrong? --Eruhildo (talk) 01:56, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

On his birth date

Ryokuu was born on the last day of the 12th month of Keiō 3 (慶応 3), namely on the 30th day of the 12th month of Keiō 3. Although some sources hold the date be the 31st, it should not be correct as the last day has to be either 29th or 30th on the Japanese lunisolar calendar (旧暦). The date "December 31, 1867" whick has also often been quoted as the date of birth seems groundless as well. Ryokuu's birth date, 慶応3年12月30日 corresponds to January 24, 1868 in the Gregorian calendar (Converting table).--Sateros (talk) 03:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

As far as I found, Baba Kocho once wrote that Ryokuu was born on the last day of 慶応3年, while Ueda kazutoshi (Ueda Mannen, ja:上田萬年) wrote Ryokuu's birthday as in June of 慶応3年, according to "現代文學全集8斎藤緑雨・石橋忍月・高山樗牛・内田魯庵" Kodansha 1980.--miya (talk) 12:00, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

In Ryakuden (略傳), Baba Kochō wrote [ 慶応3年12月31日] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) as the date of birth. But, as I pointed out, the last day has to be either 29th or 30th on the lunisolar calendar (旧暦). Since that was written in Showa 4 (昭和 4) (the Gregorian calendar was introduced in Meiji 5 (明治 5)), it's Kochō's mistake I think.
