editNote that the football club seems not to use the acute accent in the name of the place: see their official website http://www.asse.fr/ , or do a Google search. However, the place consistently uses the accent. -- The Anome 10:59, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
French convention is often to use E for É anyway. Charles Matthews 11:03, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Stéphanois
editUmm...
- Inhabitants of Saint-Étienne are called stéphanois in French. They are named so because "Saint Etienne" is the patron of happy people and "stephanos" means "happy" in the ancient greek language.
Okay...I'd have thought it's because "Etienne" is the same name as "Stephen". This explanation seems entirely dubious to me. john k 22:03, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm inclined to agree with john k. The base meaning of 'stephanos' in Ancient Greek is 'crown' or 'something encircling' which leads to crown. Their is no evidence (in my admittedly summary) search of the Liddell-Scott Lexicon which points to 'happy.' - matt - I've gone ahead and cut the references to 'happy' - matt 3/5/07
