Merge discussion
editI'm against a merge. These articles could, I think, be fleshed out considerably. - House of Scandal (talk) 00:43, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- I could go either a merge or a no merge. Merge, because the two are about the same thing in the Algonquian languages and cultures, same roles in the community, and same caucus role in a council. In English the denotation of the two are also identical, but the differences are in the connotation. No merge, if the connotative aspects of the two terms are significantly developed, with links to the article Tribal chief, with this third article further developed than what it currently is. - If the amount of information that could be added to these articles would be too much and the distinction between sachem and sagamore too great keeping the articles separate would be more useful. - Marie —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.189.59.118 (talk) 19:20, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- I have been BOLD and merged. Saying that they could, potentially, in theory, some day, be different articles is not good enough. In the many months since the merger was proposed, both articles have remained short and largely overlapping, and the main reference says they mean the same thing. I don't think there is any point in having separate articles unless and until someone adds a significant amount of new material, with good sources, which illustrates that the two terms are indeed distinct, and explains how. jnestorius(talk) 00:16, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
So what is the role of a 'Sachem'?
editI'm curious about what the limits of their power was - if it is possible to provide anything like a definitive answer. Were they effectively monarchs, or was their power far more constrained by councils / appeals to the wider community etc? Ender's Shadow Snr (talk) 23:02, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
Perhaps an adjustment should be made
editIn one of the last paragraphs of this page (as it stands on 11/14/21), there is a statement which counters a statement made in the first paragraph. The latter claims that a "Sagamore was a lesser chief than the Sachem", and yet the later citation states (under Etymology) that "modern opinion is that "sachem" and "sagamore" are dialectical variations of the same word.[8]" Perhaps the author of this page could move the text around and state that there are 2 opinions on the matter. (I would make this adjustment except it seems like a major change and I'm not sure of the protocol.) Ecw4w44 (talk) 20:34, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
