I thought I would put up a discussion page. Whoever wrote this, please remember that this is a Wikipedia article, and thus it would be best to write it to the audience of the general public. For now, it seems to be geered toward RWA students, parents, and teachers.

Agreed

I noticed this too. I find the voice of the article to be a little too partial and written in a personal style as well.

Perhaps I'll give it an edit.

The Pheonix

"The Royal West Academy yearbook is called The Phoenix, perhaps in homage to the fact that Royal West was able to rise out of the ashes of Montreal West High School." You know, when I accepted this name back in 1983, I had objected to the implication that Montreal West High School was "ashes". The consensus at the time was that it wasn't about "ash" but about "rebirth". I'll edit accordingly. Nfitz 06:37, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

I was the first editor, and part of the large group of students unhappy about the name change of the school, and the introduction of uniforms! It was the first yearbook committee that named the book. Can't remember who first suggested the name, though I do remember flip-flopping on whether it was suitable, mostly because no-one felt that MWHS was ashes. Got to remember, in those first year, particularly in the upper grades, it was exactly the same students, staff, equipment, that had been there the previous year; but with larger class sizes in the first couple of grades, (with the merger in of the Royalvale students, and some increased enrollement from outside the traditional catchment area) Nfitz 01:28, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm thrilled to hear that it's still named the same. And still has a literature section too! I'll have to check my old copies, but my recollection is that's something we wanted to add that wasn't in The Challenge. I'll have to do a couple of other tweaks in the article; RWA might be different than it's predecessor, but the change was slow and planned. All the MWHS staff were retained (couldn't fire them if they wanted ... union), and most of the students (though a few rebelled, and left before the school year started). Same administration. Everyone felt it was the same school, 'cept for the uniform, and a new homeroom system. I think there were more shocks from the conversion from a 6-period to a 7-period day, than anything else ... and that was the Ministry's doing, co-incidental to the change-over (or did that happen the year before ...). 1997 book? Royal Vale

The article notes that the Montreal West Elementary school closed in 1980, and the Royal Vale elementary school moved in. In September 1980 though, there was no elementary school in the building. The main building was Montreal West High School, and the back was Royal Vale ... not sure the formal name, but it was a high school, of sort ... Grade 7 and Grade 8. (Level I and Level II). Wasn't the Royal Vale Elementary school somewhere else in the early 1980's? Nfitz 06:50, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

I wrote that after reading it in the Montreal West coffee table book that was printed to coincide with the 1997 Montreal West centennial. That was not taken from my hazy memories. Perhaps it was wrong though, who knows? Dross82 23:02, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

I was under the impression that the Royal Vale students from September 1980 on were strictly Grade 7/8 (and perhaps 9?). I have absolutely no recollection of seeing anyone younger than Grade 7 in the building; though they did tend to keep those of us on the MWHS side out of the Royal Vale (back) part of the building. Someone who was on the Royal Vale side for those years should confirm; if I come across any I shall ask them. Nfitz 01:23, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

ECAs

Hello. new rules implemented this 06-07 year limited all ECAs to activities within the school, thereby eliminating the external equivalence option. The article has yet to reflect that, as maybe it had just been put into place. Cutting it out completely doesn't really look right, and I have no idea of what to put in its place. Welcome & Goodbye BBQ

Why were these deleted (I've since reverted the edits)? Have these been discontinued at the school? If so, I feel they still belong in the article - simply change the text to the past tense.

Reform

I believe that some of the topics should be reviewed and update in accordance to the recent reform. I have already taken the liberty to include information on the new "green" credit that must be fulfilled along with the other credits. Notable Graduates & Students / Clubs

Removed the "Notable Students" section for security reasons. Removed some "not-so-notable" graduates (come on now, someone could list the entire alumni if they wanted to!)

Removed Staff List

I don't feel that it was at all necessary to include a staff list on this page. This information can be found on the Royal West Academy website for those curious enough to go searching for it. International Student Exchanges and trips?

Someone should make mention of the student exchanges. They're pretty remarkable considering the fact that they take place in a public high school. The number and magnitude of the trips for every grade are quite impressive as well, and worth mentioning. 174.89.247.213 (talk) 00:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

General Rework and Suggestions

I've reworked the article a bit. It felt odd going into so much detail about the admission process in the header, so I've moved that to a new section. A few touch ups in the History section. The Environment Committee section was a real mess. Lots of fluff about the specific activities carried out and guest speakers from 2006. I tried to cleave good amount of it out and make it more encyclopedia-like.

Suggestions to someone more motivated:

• Add more info regarding student groups (feels odd to have the Student Groups section if only one is listed)
• History section needs lots of citations
• As was mentioned above, some info on Student Exchange Trips could be nice
• Potentially remove the line about math competitions, or add more recent examples (one example from 16 years ago sounds pretty sad)...

Once these are done I'd say we can remove the "Multiple Issues" tag. Zeebo7 (talk) 09:45, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
