It's not an invalid character, it's an actual question mark; that's how he writes it. He prounces it "Questlove," however.

Assuming the ? in this page title is an invalid character, what should the real title of this page be? Or is it just ?uestlove? Fantom 21:12, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

This page is titled correctly. --FuriousFreddy 00:35, 27 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

What are The ROOTS doing with their Members? First they replaced the Percussionist and now they replaced him with yet another Keyboardist. WHY ?? SenseiTommy (talk) 08:07, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Chappelle's Show

edit

?uestlove was also the Musical Director for Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central, but i'm not sure that was his actual title. and now i'm having trouble finding a source for that. i know i read it somewhwere, though...69.181.121.40 03:28, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Naming

edit

Couldn't we just call him by his real name? Passages like "By the age of seven, ?uestlove began drumming" look just silly. Mütze 18:57, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

i disagree, maybe it looks strange, but theres precedent elsewhere. Check out the mark twain article "Mark Twain was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835." or the Jay-Z article "Jay-Z attended George Westinghouse High School in Downtown Brooklyn." That said i've seen him referred to as "?uestlove Thompson" in magazines etc, so maybe referring to him as Thompson every once in a while would be acceptable. --Cptbuck 22:07, 21 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category Sorting

edit

If the article is named correctly, as "?uestlove", why is it sorted as "Questlove"? I thought the above discussions concluded that the guy's name should always start with a question mark. Hoof Hearted 22:21, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category sorting isn't always about correct spelling. It is much more about where in an alphabetical list a name should appear. The question mark does not appear in the alphabet, and so cannot be sorted. Since the name is clearly supposed to be a representation of Questlove (and is pronounced as such, for instance), it makes sense to sort it as if it were "Questlove", while accepting that it should be written "?uestlove". The text after "{{DEFAULTSORT:" is never seen by a reader. --Stemonitis 22:51, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
A question mark doesn't appear in the alphabet, but numbers and punctuation marks do appear in ASCII ranking and are sorted within Wikipedia's categories (before letters). Specifically, I've been working on Category:People known by pseudonyms and I felt the question mark was an interesting aspect of his pseudonym. If someone had the pseudonym "Mr. ?" I feel that ?uestlove should be grouped with it. Should the band 311 be sorted as "Three Eleven"? Some other examples are !Bang!, !Kung people, and @stake, which I feel are properly sorted on their first character. Hoof Hearted 15:45, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
That may be your opinion, but I doubt that that is the consensus view (it's not mine at least). Numbers sort OK, as you point out, but other characters are unpredictable. The guideline at WP:CAT states that one should convert "non-standard letters to the nearest standard letters" for the purposes of category sorting, and, although none of the examples is exactly analogous with this situation, I think it would be interpreted as meaning that. The exclamation mark in "!Kung" is pronounced, rather than being mere punctuation, but is still omitted for sorting purposes in Category:Khoisan languages (as is also the case for the marvellously-named ǂKxʼauǁʼein languages). I can't see any compelling to treat the pretentious (in my opinion) question mark in "?uestlove" as anything other than the "Q" it is clearly trying to imitate. I'm not saying we should ever spell it with a Q, but it should clearly sort as one. --Stemonitis 18:48, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK. I didn't realize there was a guideline (I had been looking for one to cite as well). I agree with your interpretation that ? is analogous as the guideline is written, and will go with the flow. And it makes sense for a vast majority of the cases. However, if there really was a "Mr. ?" or the like, I would push for an ammendment to the guideline to include certain exceptions. How else could we handle a (silly) category like "Names with punctuation marks in them"? Hoof Hearted 19:55, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

PS - Categories on the !Kung people page (specifically) are being sorted by !Kung. You are right that some of the related !Kung articles are sorted under K.

Fixed! I take your point about a possible "Mr. ?", but I think we can wait until the problem arises before worrying about how to deal with it. Incidentally, there are hundreds of articles with punctuation marks in the title: see all the Irish people and their descendants with surnames like O'Brian and O'Reilly. (I have recently changed all of these (or all I could find) to keep the punctuation out of the sort keys.) --Stemonitis 20:20, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Requested move

edit

This article has been renamed from ?uestlove to Questlove as the result of a move request.

The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was - unopposed move to bring in line with WP:MOSTRADE. Keith D (talk) 23:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

?uestloveQuestlove — This person's name is not prounced as "Question mark estlove", it's prounced as "Questlove". The current name violates WP:MOS, which says not to do odd spellings just because that is what the subject prefers (henc why we have Pink (singer)), not "P!nk", or Korn instead of "KoЯn". "Questlove" is both how his stagename is pronounced anyways and complies with our naming policies. —TJ Spyke 06:01, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Awards

edit

Dear Wikipedians

Questlove has won the Best Director* for his documentary 'Summer of Soul' but there is no table on his Wikipedia page listing his honours and awards.

Is there any specific reason or consensus on this subject? May I or anyone else create such a table?

With regards

Is winning the Oscar for Best Documentary not notable enough to warrant inclusion? It's nowhere in the article body, the only reference to it is in the awards table, but no mention of the award itself, even in the section about the film. I am willing to add it, but don't know if there's some weird rule regarding putting it in the body of the article. FrederalBacon (talk) 06:27, 28 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Grandfather
