The first sentence bears a striking resemblance to the definition in the on-line American Heritage Dictionary (2000):
A school or college course, especially one in a specialized field of study, that is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied theory <http://www.bartleby.com/61/89/P0498900.html>
A practicum is a college course, often in a specialized field of study, that is designed to give students supervised practical application of a previously studied theory <http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Practicum>
A second application of "Practicum" is not specificly the college course but a performance test or practical exam for the Laboratory component of a college course. An example of this is a Chemistry Lab Practicum. You are given 10 work stations with 5 minutes at each station. At the first station you have to calculate the volume, mass, and density of a block of wood. At the second station you have to identify 8 pieces of lab equipment. At other stations you will be given a written problem and you have to solve the problem using a chemical formula. I am currently attending University of Nevada Las Vegas and to pass chemistry I have to complete a lab practicum.131.216.163.207 (talk) 20:02, 7 December 2011 (UTC) (retrograde62@yahoo.com) 11:51, 07 December 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.216.163.207 (talk)
- Your post is a much better explanation of what a practicum is than the article! Thank you! UnderEducatedGeezer (talk) 02:33, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
