Notable storms

edit

I just finished the 1996 season, and did 1997, 1998, and 2003 with the notable storms format. Is this acceptable for showing major storms, should we show no notable storms, or should we list every storm each season? I notice that on the 2004, 2002, 2001 (with the exception of Vamei), 2000, and 1999, it doesn't say anything about the individual storms. We should discuss the formatting here (if anyone is even here :) Hurricanehink 20:20, 30 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry, I have almost all of these on my watchlist :) Anyway, I think the notable storm format is good. That way, we can get the big points across quickly (and with continuity). -- RattleMan 20:32, 30 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Good to know that, lol! That sounds good, so I'll fix the other years. Hurricanehink 21:38, 30 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

How far back?

edit

Like any list of seasons, the question begs to be asked; How far back should we go. JTWC reports go back to 1959, Unisys goes back to 1945, but reliable satellite imagery only goes back to around 1970. I am sort of adopting this as my section of the month (I try and improve a hurricane section each month, I've done stubs, Atlantic hurricane seasons, individual summaries for 1950-1978 seasons), so I will do whatever. I personally vote for 1950; a nice, round date and a good mid-point IMO for 1945 and 1959. Hurricanehink 03:08, 2 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I agree with 1950. You sure are quite the amazing guy, doing all this stuff. I can try to help. -- RattleMan 03:19, 2 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, and I'd be glad for the help. 1950 sounds good, but we should wait to officially extend it further (it doesn't look nice with all the red, IMO). Hurricanehink 12:40, 2 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Just putting it here so I don't lose it. This has naming for every typhoon up to 1951, beyond the 1959 JTWC report. That will help once I get there....

Why not go all the way? Like the Atlantic, there are obviously some storms before 1950, but how do we find them? I'm sure with some research, we could go back to 1940, with a Pre-1940 Pacific typhoon seasons article to encompass all years, like the North Indian season list. (see below) Is this fine with everyone here (oh wait a second, is anyone even here besides Rattleman?!)?

Good news! I just found a website that will allow me to go back to 1566!

Now the only problem is from 1934 to 1945. We can make this a complete archive. If what I am doing is a complete waste, someone please tell me. Otherwise, I'm going all the way. Hurricanehink 15:55, 11 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

How should the articles go? Personally, I think it should be yearly back to 1950. From 1600 through 1950 it would be decadal. There would be one last article, Pre-1600 Pacific typhoon seasons. Good? Bad? Does anyone even care? Hurricanehink 02:35, 18 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Philippine Storm Names

edit

How far back should we mention those? All the way? 1990? Personally, I am just pasting the list every 4 years, fixing accordingly for retired storms. I have no idea which storm is which, so should we bother keeping it? Do we even have a source for the names for each season? Am I asking too many questions? ;) Hurricanehink 22:21, 5 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • Check this file at the Typhoon2000 website by Michael Padua. They have names of Philippine storm names and their english names from 1963 to 1988, [[7]]. And you might be able to ask him additional information at this topic at the discussion centre [[8]] 8 November 2005
Aww man. Thanks for the link, but personally, I am getting too lazy to add all of the information for each and every year. Anyone else can do if they want, but I still thank you for the site. Hurricanehink 03:14, 8 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Pre-1950

edit

We should have an article Pre-1950 Pacific typhoon seasons, that simply gives a tabled list of storms like is done for the old Atlantic articles. Note that just deleting the links to the existing pre-1950 articles doesn't help much, since the articles are still there. — jdorje (talk) 00:51, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm deleting them for now because there is no information in there. There could be enough information for decadal articles for quite a while back. Just check above at the top of the page. Hurricanehink 00:53, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'll merge them. Hurricanehink 00:54, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, we should start by making a pre-1950 article, then when enough information is available we can split it up and keep moving it back in time. Certain typhoons like the Kamikaze would never be mentioned outside of a pre-XXXX article. — jdorje (talk) 01:04, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
That sounds good, but we should finish 1950-1958 first. Hurricanehink 01:19, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Minimum article requirement

edit

It seems to me that the minimum number of storm descriptions in an article to let it stay is four. Is that true or should it become a rule in the west pacific? Icelandic Hurricane #12 14:21, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Now knowing that one sentence is needed for each storm to be a start class, we really need to go through and add more storms. Anyone wanna help? íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 01:39, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I would, but I'm sick of the WPAC. I suppose it's my fault that the season articles only have a few descriptions per season, but I did 40+ years of that. Sorry, but I can't help. Too many other thins to do. Hurricanehink (talk) 01:57, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Corrections on article

edit

Every article before 1963 says that PAGASA is naming storms within its AOR (or suggest they did?). But PAGASA haven't even started naming tropical storms until 1963 when they have established a 4 list of names. Should this be corrected? Season dates

edit

Most of the years lead paragraph has "most... form May to November" but some (60's to 80's in particular) have June to November. Btljs (talk) 05:42, 16 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

To be honest that looks like a line that needs to be more specific in each season article depending on that seasons activity.Jason Rees (talk) 03:34, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, or along the lines of "over the last X years X% of typhoons have happened between X and Y" but it would mean finding a source Btljs (talk) 21:15, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Regions

edit

According to the Natural hazards map of the circum-Pacific region. There are three region of storm in pacific area as Philippines, East pacific (coastal of Mexico to Nicaragua) and around Australia-New Zealand. Is it possible to write here?--Tranletuhan (talk) 09:11, 29 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merge?

edit

With typhoon. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 20:44, 8 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Hurricanehink mobile: Not yet, I would say. I am working out something in my sandbox about this article and improving it like the List of Pacific hurricanes and List of Atlantic hurricane records, if it is ok for you guys. Typhoon2013 (talk) 19:45, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure if that's necessary. A lot of what's in your sandbox is already covered in the article on typhoon. A lot of what you have is trivial, or is already on other articles. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:03, 16 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Anyone have any thoughts on this? It would be nice to have the WPAC info organized through one article (typhoon). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:32, 28 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Table cleanup

edit

I personally think that the tables regarding each PTS' stats could be better organised? Perhaps taking off the column of the number of retired typhoon names since someone can just basically see and count how many there are. This goes the same towards the decades' totals of the retirees because I believe there is a separate article(s) for that regarding retired typhoon names, either by the JMA or PAGASA. Any other thoughts would be nice. Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:09, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Yea that's a good idea, axe the number of retired storm names. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:24, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Why wasn't this moved to Pacific typhoon season like all the other pages were? YE Pacific Hurricane 15:40, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Yellow Evan: There is now a section about that below this topic. Me and Hink do fully support this move. Typhoon2013 (talk) 00:59, 13 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Move?

edit

List of Pacific typhoon seasonsPacific typhoon season. There is no:

  1. List of Atlantic hurricane seasons
  2. List of Pacific hurricane seasons
  3. List of North Indian Ocean cyclone seasons
  4. List of South-West Indian Ocean cyclone seasons
  5. List of Australian region cyclone seasons
  6. List of South Pacific cyclone seasons and to a lesser extent,
  7. List of South Atlantic tropical cyclone seasons (redlink)
  8. List of Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone seasons (redlink)... I don't view those as TCs.

So why not move to Pacific typhoon season to catch up to the other XX cyclone season articles? 🐔Chicdat ChickenDatabase 11:20, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Column headings for 1940s table

edit

I noticed that, in the tables, the columns for the number of storms are titled

TD TS TY STY

except for the 1940s, where the order is different and they're

TS TD TY STY

Is that by any chance a typo?

Yes, fix it. 🐔 Chicdat ChickenDatabase 10:59, 27 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

1970s

edit

I noticed that in the table row for the 1970s, you have 1971-1974 grouped together when they all have individual articles. I don't want to start an edit war, so is this something that should be changed or not? CodingCyclone (talk) 21:53, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

SSWS comparison

edit

I'm leaving the original graph I made for comparing the typhoon intensity to the saffir-simpson scale due to realizing they cannot be compared, but keeping it in the talk section so that I can easily reference and clean it up if the mood ever strikes. exoplanetaryscience (talk) 23:11, 14 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
