What is the reference for West Hampton Dunes being an island?
editI have been spending summer on Quantuck Creek for my whole life and just began to ponder the question. Here is word from the Town of Southampton:

I spoke with the Sr. Bay Constable Ted Sadleir and he told me that the "island" you are referring to is known as the "Barrier Beach" and it is also considered part of "Fire Island", which was dredged through to make the Shinnecock and Moriches inlets.

I'd like to get a USGS reference. The USGS does not support West Hampton Dunes being an island. Bodysurfinyon (talk) 01:36, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
- Far as I can see, the question is, did the digging of the Quogue Canal in 1896 create a separate island? If so, then WHD is now near the west end of that island, which is entirely surrounded by water. If, on the other hand an artificial channel or canal does not consitute a geographic separation, then this particular barrier beach is not a separate island but a long thin peninsula. There are a lot of references to this as a barrier island. And a USGS report The Westhampton Beach Disaster and a US Fish and Wildlife Study report refer to it as Wethampton Beach barrier island. There is a USGS feature Westhampton Beach. This is a "Bar" and not an island. Via private email, I know the USGS is aware that there is some ambiguity about whether that is an island or not. This seems like a better name than West Hampton Dunes, so, I'm changing it. Bodysurfinyon (talk) 02:07, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- August 1, 2010, the USGS adopted the name Westhampton Island, which had been used in Piping Plover research for a long time. Alternative names: Quantuck Island and Dune Road Island. Bodysurfinyon (talk) 14:32, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Outer barrier → Outer Barrier – Both forms are used in sources, but the capitalized form is rather less confusing to our readers as a geographical name. Pharos (talk) 15:55, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
- Support: This actually appears to be a proper name, along with Long Beach Barrier Island, etc. It's like the Bahamas, each of which has its own proper name, too. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 03:28, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
