Why is Olympiacos named "Olympiacos CFP" in the article, when the original Greek name is Olympiacos SFP? What does the "CFP" mean? –Okino (talk) 14:44, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear friend Okino, I really thank you for your note.
The initials CFP in the name of Olympikos wes an old stupid attempt by the leaders of the football department of the team, to transfer the initials of the team to English, (due to a stupid anglomania), so that they would be identified with the corresponding Greek ΣΦΠ. This attempt is flawed for the following two reasons.
1. The initials of the teams should not be transliterated, because then they will be different in each language.
2. CFP are the initials of the words "Club Fan (of) Piraeus", which are supposed to correspond to the Greek words "Σύνδεσμος Φιλάθλων Πειραιώς" («Syndesmos Filathlon Pireos»). But neither the Greek word "Σύνδεσμος", nor the Greek "Φίλαθλος" correctly convey the meaning of the English words "Club" and "Fan".
For the word "Σύνδεσμος" I think the most correct rendering is the word "Conjunction".
As for the word «fan», there is the Greek "οπαδός", which is someone who faithfully follows a group (or even a certain worldview). But a "φίλαθλος" is someone who is generally a friend of sports [φίλος=friend + άθλημα=sport]. (I don't know if there is an equivalent English word. I would rather render it as "sports follower").
Therefore, if we want to translate the "Σύνδεσμος Φιλάθλων Πειραιώς", a rather correct rendering would be "Conjunction of Sports followers of Piraeus", which should only be there as an explanation and not in the title of the club.
Fortunately, the men in charge of the rest sections of the team (apart of football and basketball) have kept the initials SFP in the foreign language title of the team, as they should. For this reason I had moved the title in the multisport Olympiacos article as Olympiacos SFP instead of Olympiacos CFP, but my edit was reversed.
So if I managed to be persuasive, I ask the English-language editors dealing with Olympiacos articles, to correct the team title in all sections of the club (including the football one) as Olympiacos SFP, which is the only name that can stand in all languages with Latin alphabet.
