Talk:OSO 7

I should report, per WP:COI, that I was involved as a grad student in the UCSD Cosmic X-ray experiment, and am a co-author on the scientific publications I have listed for that experiment. I am especially sorry not to have anything noted for the pointed solar (sail) experiments, but I am unfamiliar with their results and do not see anything about them on the HEASARC summary page. Also, Mel Ulmer was lead author on most of the UCSD Cosmic scientific papers, and deserves great credit in any more complete listing of its results. Wwheaton (talk) 14:36, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The image on the NASA Site here is actually not OSO 7, correctly shown here, at all, but an earlier spacecraft in the same series. The OSO 7 had a different appearance than the six earlier members of the series, and was significantly larger and heavier. I have accordingly commented out the image from the article page. The [[OSO 1] through OSO 7 were all built by BBRC, OSO 8 was by a different contractor, and looked different as well. The first six looked superficially quite similar to each other. The HEASARC image on their main OSO 7 page is also incorrect. Wwheaton (talk) 09:49, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have now uploaded a correct OSO 7 image from the NASA HEASARC "Gallary"; note that three of the five images there are actually incorrect, of the earlier OSO 1-6 design. I believe that this image is OK to use as US Government work, but I am not an expert on these matters, which is why I did not use it earlier. (The previous, incorrect, image was from the same NASA GSFC source, and presumably had the same copyright status.) Wwheaton (talk) 10:19, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I see that GSFC has now corrected their image for OSO 7; I had reported the problem noted above to them earlier. Wwheaton (talk) 14:51, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
