So why do you think Nona has never gotten the reconigtion she deserved?

I've been a fan since the Labelle days. I think she's had a lot of bad luck with record companies getting excited about her, and then dropping the ball (RCA, EMI). The "Nona" album ("Keep It Confidential") should have done much better than it did. It was brilliant. Nona was on the verge of making a major breakthrough with "Why Should I Cry" (it got lots of radio play), and then EMI decided not to promote their black artists (same thing happened to Sarah Dash, as she was on that label at the same time). I think she just got fed up with the whole pop scene and changed her style with "Skindiver". I think she should have kept making danceable music on the side because she is so great at it. But, she is VERY respected in the industry now as a composer, producer, musician. I wish they would make available some of her unreleased recordings on the web or something. Honestly, I think part of it is also part of the issue with this article -- the most obvious question is, "Did you name yourself after Jimi? That's not your real name, is it?" -- and this article ducks the issue. Can we get an answer on this one? (I don't know that this hurt her career, specifically, but I'll note that there was basically a glut of this type of synth-funk-pop music being produced in the 80s, and most likely she just got lost in the crowd; basically, this is a classic dilemma for an up-and-coming musician/singer: do you "give the people what they want" (or, more negatively, "follow the crowd") by jumping on a current trend, or do you "go for something different and personal"...which can allow one to stand out, or even become a legend (a certain Hendrix comes to mind)...but at the same time, particularly if you intend to make a *living* in the music business, you risk having next-to-zero opportunities and only appealing to a niche market?
