Lopsided
editThis article has very little information about the north part of the city. I appreciate that we've got a separate article for North Nicosia, and we wouldn't wanna duplicate the whole of it, but it seems appropriate that an article named 'Nicosia' should contain information about both sides. Alakzi (talk) 14:35, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- This issue was a very hot one in the past as far as I remember, I had advocated having three separate articles (Nicosia to include both sides, North Nicosia and South Nicosia) to prevent giving undue weight to any side as "Nicosia" itself as a city consists of both sides. However, I remember that the general consensus/practical result was for the status quo and almost all photos of North Nicosia were removed, as was the case for the photos of the north in the article of Cyprus (even though the division is not the same story for Nicosia and Cyprus). I still personally think that the south is given undue weight in the article. However, the collage still includes a photo from the north and there are fragments of information from the north, so the current situation is a bit paradoxical. --GGT (talk) 14:50, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
NO! Turkish-occupied Nicosia is not a separate entity. It is occupied by the Turkish army. Neo ^ (talk) 06:25, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Nicosia or Lefkosia
editHaving read the article there is only a brief mention of the alternative name for the city, Lefkosia.
While the city is popularly known as Nicosia among English speakers, all road signs I Cyprus refer to it as Lefkosia.
Should this page at least have Lefkosia in brackets after the name or some reference to its other name?
Apologies if this topic has been covered before, but I could I could not see it in any of the talk parts visible to me at the moment Fairysweetness (talk) 23:44, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
- Lefkosia is the official name in Greek, of course, you see it everywhere in Cyprus, duh! As to why the English name is Nicosia, this is a mystery and the toponomy section doesn't explain it at all. --2001:16B8:31C8:6300:9F3:FFD9:A27:E9F2 (talk) 17:30, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- Fixed, as well as possible. Note that Wiktionary's Nicosia entry blames Old French, which Hill doesn't. Perhaps a competing WP:RS could be found on that point to add it as another possibility. — LlywelynII 11:53, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
"Pronunciation"
edit- ({{IPAc-en|ˌ|n|ɪ|k|ə|ˈ|s|iː|ə}} {{respell|NIK|ə|SEE|ə}})
This is currently unsourced and either wrong or entirely confined to Oxbridge classicists. The default English pronunciation will have a long O and a good chance of a terminal yuh. We could laundry list all the possible pronunciations with cites (if we did, a better place would be the expanded #Names section I just rehabbed) but the better option is to just leave it for Wiktionary under WP:NOTDICT and the fact that any default pronunciation by an English speaker able to read the rest of the page is going to be valid. Nicosia wasn't an exonym when the Crusaders were ruling the place but it certainly is now. The valid prescriptivist pronunciations (i.e. the Greek and Turkish names) are both still given in the #Names section. — LlywelynII 11:53, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
This page was established with American spelling. Kindly maintain it consistently, pending a new consensus to the contrary. (I get that there's an argument for Britlish given the colounial 'istory, but I'll leave it to the locals as to whether they want to maintain that themselves.) — LlywelynII 14:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
New Image
editHello,
I have added new images to the page's infobox, consisting of the following:
Nicosia Skyline, Ledra Street, Eleftheria square, Door in the Old Town, Venetian Homes, Nicosia Christmas fair, Makariou Avenue
*In italics: these places were also found in the previous image collage of the page | *In bold: these exact images were also found in the previous image collage of the page
I've added these new updated images which fit the current state of the city (ex.: new skyline).
Add any new images to the template freely; or even old ones that I did not include from the old photo collage (Previous Nicosia Collage). Lomaine (talk) 16:38, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
Anglican Church
editThe article has a section on the "Anglican Church", also described as "The church of St. Paul". The church's own website calls it "St Paul's Anglican Cathedral" (a name also used elsewhere). So is it a church or a cathedral? GrindtXX (talk) 20:29, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
