I realize that Talk pages are not forums to discuss the article subject but Nicholas Alahverdian was extradicted over 2 months ago back to the United States and I wonder if anyone has come across news of what has happened since then. He had a lot of charges filed against him. I believe the Rhode Island newspaper requires a subscription but I know some editors who have followed this case have access to their archives. Thanks for any update you can supply. Liz Read! Talk! 19:14, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Courts move at the speed of sloth in the States; I'd be surprised if he even had a trial date set before 2025. Primefac (talk) 19:19, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Mr. Rossi is facing two separate felony rape charges in two different districts in Utah, District 3 and District 4 and Primefac is right, courts can run very slow.
Below are the links to the judges court dates. All action to date has been pre-trial in nature.
On Friday, April 19th, he is expected to appear in the 3rd Distict Court. https://legacy.utcourts.gov/cal/search.php?t=p&c=&p=ROSSI&j=&f=&l=&b=&d=2024-04-19&loc=all is the link to search for the info.
In the 3rd District, the judge's last name is Lawrence. He has a lawyer for this trial. He has asked this judge to have the jail refer to him by the name of Arthur Knight. The judge indicated he would not direct the jail to do so, as the paperwork has the name of Alahverdian/Rossi. The judge informally volunteered he would refer to him as Arther Knight in the court.
For the 4th district, here is the link for the next appointment which is May 14th. There was a hearing earlier this week, and it was extended for another month for a final chance to work out paying for the lawyer he had retained to date. Mr Rossi tried make several separate motions during the hearing, but the judge did not allow it. This is the second extension regarding the lawyer being paid. Link is: Court Calendar Search Results - Utah Courts (utcourts.gov). The judge is Pullan. LearnMore2024! (talk) 17:33, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Here is a summary of where the two separate rape charges are proceeding against Nicholas Rossi. They are:
In Utah State District Court 3, Judge Lawrence is presiding and is holding an expected half day hearing on June 12th for the alleged rape that occured in Salt Lake County. The link to search for the time and to get the link to watch if interested via webex is above. In this trial, Mr. Rossi is represented by his own council. The state is expected to lay out the evidence against Mr. Rossi at this time.
In Utah State District Court 4, Judge Pullam is presiding and is holding a similar hearing on June 18th. The hearing today was the result of a second delay given by the judge to allow Mr. Rossi to fund a lawyer via his wife in Scotland, but was unsuccessful. In conversations with the Judge, he has opted to represent himself in this trial, turning down the opportunity for a public defender. He was later advised against this by the judge, and was informed of of the mandatory penalty of five years to life if found guilty. The judge questioned his overall knowledge of Utah law, especially in the area of evidence, which he indicated he would study in the Law Library at the jail. He indicated under oath that he had studied law in Bristol, England and had represented himself in Scotland regarding his extradition. As Mr. Rossi does not have access to email, the judge requested that the prosecutors hand over all discovery materials within one week.
The state is expected to lay out the evidence against Mr. Rossi at the June 18th hearing.
Mr. Rossi requested that he be referred to Arthur Knight both in the court room and the jail, but the judge did not rule in his favor
At some point after these two separate proceedings, Mr. Rossi will be arraigned in order for him to plead guilty or not guilty. LearnMore2024! (talk) 18:55, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Correcting my comments from above, or they have changed dates:
In Utah State District 3, Judge Lawrence, the next hearing is Friday, June 14th at 1 PM, MST. This is a virtual meeting, with this link: https://utcourts.webex.com/meet/JudgeLawrence and the case is 221906768 if you search for future court dates: https://legacy.utcourts.gov/cal/search.php?t=p&c=&p=ROSSI&j=&f=&l=&b=&d=2024-04-19&loc=all.
In Untal State District 4: The next hearing is Friday, June 21st, also at 1 PM MST. The judge is Judge Pullam, and the case number is 201402758. In this case, he is representing himself and this is an in person preliminary hearing. You can use the link above to find (slightly) more information and the link if you care to watch this or the other court date via webex. The search site tends to be a bit slow...best to use the case number, the date, etc. LearnMore2024! (talk) 16:44, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Further correcting, as there may have been schedule changes or I entered data incorrectly:
This week, the week of June 17th, there are two appearances for the 4th District Court and are listed below.
Tuesday, June 18th, 1 PM (MST) is for the 4th Judicial District Court, with Judge Pullan. This is listed for the appointment of counsel. The defendant previously had indicated he would represent himself.
Friday, June 21st, 1 PM (MST) also for the 4th Judicial District Court, and Judge Pullan, is a previously scheduled in-person preliminary hearing, I believe the judge indicated that this was when the prosecution would present evidence before the trial. With the appointment of new counsel, I do not know if this will happen.
The next appearance for the 3rd Judicial District Court, Judge Lawrence has moved to July 12th, also at 1 PM. The defendant has counsel for this charge/trial.
Info here: Court Calendar Detail - Utah Courts (utcourts.gov) LearnMore2024! (talk) 17:41, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Per the hearing ref the 4th Judicial District has just been completed: The defendant requested and will receive a lawyer with the Public Defenders Office. The State will send over the pre-trial Discovery to the Public Defenders Office. There is still a meeting this Friday which I believe will be a waiver only that was scheduled prior to the defendent requesting counsel. The Judge wanted to have the expected meeting movedfrom this Friday next week. Judge Pullan indicated that the trial may start and be completed this year, and this was in response to the defendant wanting to bypass the pre-trial hearing and go right to a trial by Judge. The judge did stress that this could be a complex case.
And...that is if I heard it all correctly.
So...a waiver meeting this Friday at 1 P.M, which was the original appointment, where technically, it would be expected to schedule the hearing originally slated for this Friday.
And for the 3rd District Court, with Judge Lawrence, that hearing, an in person hearing, is slated for July 12th at 1 PM. The website lists both an In-Person and Virtual event. LearnMore2024! (talk) 20:50, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
At the hearing today, for the 4th District Court, Judge Pullan approved the request of the Public Defender's Office to move the hearing out to August 30th, citing significant data that still needed to be reviewed.
For the case before the 3rd District Court, Judge Lawrence, the next hearing is slated for Friday, July 26th at 1 PM. That is an in person hearing. This case has had a Public Defender appointed for a longer period of time. LearnMore2024! (talk) 19:59, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Be nice if we could get someone to go to the courthouse and get a pic of him. Primefac (talk) 00:27, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great point! Most of the court dates have been virtual, save one. But these are the Utah state courts and they are all on Webex, so he has been seen virtually from jail. His appearance for each visit has an even longer beard than before. For this past Tuesday, he was on camera from the jail for only a few seconds as his public defender (also virtual) did most of the talking, specifically asking for more time. I noticed on the Webex that several networks were covering it, as this was supposed (I think) to share some discovery points. When newsworthy things happen in these two cases, (one in District 3 and one in District 4) it will be covered...Law and Crime network, the Utah TV stations, and a Providence RI station too. The previous court dates where he appeared on camera from the jail are on YouTube. This link is from his very first US court date where he is being arraigned. The court staff did not know the background. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V68M6wGLe5Q
However, the court date this Friday is in person so one of those networks may indeed get a photo of him. That court date starts at 1 PM MST. He certainly will be on camera then once inside the court room. He will probably be one of a few cases heard, so his case may not start at that specific time. The link to watch it is: https://utcourts.webex.com/wbxmjs/joinservice/sites/utcourts/meeting/download/295e8e4a8f4c7aacc0a195f6b59a760a
The court date this Friday is a separate case, it's the same charge, just in a different county and court district, and a different Public Defender. LearnMore2024! (talk) 02:21, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

"The many faces of the fugitive who faked his own death"

There’s a quite comprehensive feature about Alahverdian in The Sunday Times. Paywall Archive And for U.K. viewers, a TV programme, "Imposter: The Man Who Came Back from the Dead", begins on Channel 4 at 9pm on May 20. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 00:03, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Image of Alaverdian with Mike Pence

edit

No actual reason has been given for a user's repeated attempts to delete this image, so let's start a section it. For what it's worth, I see no reason to remove the image (which has been on the article for years at this point), which illustrates the article well, particularly his days lobbying politicians as a child welfare advocate. MrOllie (talk) 18:36, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Alahverdian lobbied the RI state government. He did not lobby at the national level, nor did he lobby in Indiana while Pence was governor. Given you have no reason for adding the image, it should be deleted. JerrySlimefeld (talk) 18:53, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of image of Mike Pence

edit

The image of Mike Pence implies political connections with Alahveridian that do not exist. As a result, we have made the decision that the picture is not to be included in the article. This decision was made by the Wikipedia community as a whole and reflects our collective opinion. JerrySlimefeld (talk) 18:43, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

See section immediately above this one. MrOllie (talk) 18:47, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Given you haven't cited this claimed decision "made by the Wikipedia community as a whole", your argument carries zero weight. I checked the talk-page archives and found none. But you've been trying this for several years and multiple other editors oppose, so there's no assumption you are correct either. DMacks (talk) 19:17, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's certainly been a long time since I was accused of vandalism, so that's fun. OP now blocked, pretty clearly trolling, so I think we're done here. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 21:15, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
