1987 release doubtful

edit

People on Discogs, Wikipedia and elsewhere often assume the latest copyright date on a release is the release date. That tends to be a safe assumption, but isn't always correct. Most, if not all, releases of this single have 1987 copyright dates, meaning—if accurate—that the audio and artwork were prepared in 1987, perhaps anticipating a late 1987 release. Only Japanese releases have actual release dates printed on them...and they indicate that the Japanese editions of this single came out 25 May 1988.

However, this was one of the last singles to be released from the 2nd album. In the US, it entered the chart at #90 on 27 Feb 1988 and didn't peak at #3 until 14 weeks later (early June). So, maybe it came out in late 1987 in North America, but in Europe it almost certainly didn't, despite the 1987 copyright dates. In the UK, for example, it entered the chart on 21 May 1988. The French chart site shows 1988 availability dates for the European editions in their database, including 24 Apr 1988 for one edition. It's just very unlikely it really came out in Europe in late 1987 and then sat around for many months before charting. They just did not update its copyright dates. This happens a lot with Jive label releases, I noticed.

Until a 1987 date can be attributed to a reliable source, we should not assume 1987. —mjb (talk) 06:34, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
