– The official names of the highways have been changed. It was not a mere change in number but few of the old highways or a part of those combined with others to form new highways. So the page describing the major portion of the present highway was edited to suit the present renaming/reorganization, so that most part of the history of the page is carried forward. Marlisco (talk) 07:47, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Plus it will make incorrect any existing Wikilinks to the old highway numbers, and no evidence has been presented to show that the moves should be made. After fixing all the Wikilinks, I'd think it would be better to move all the highways to Old National Highway XX (India) and just create new articles under the new numbering system, since the history of Highway XX as Highway XX doesn't disappear when part of it becomes Highway YY. Dekimasuよ! 08:13, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I guess you have got it wrong. As I understood there is no highway which is not renumbered(in fact it was not a renumbering but a reorganization). The example you have given, National Highway 73 (India)(old numbering) is now part of three highways NH 7, NH 173 and NH 344 in new numbering system.Marlisco (talk) 08:52, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • So I take it they are all to be moved, and not just the first 50. But what about the other problem, changing the direct links to highway articles that rely on information from the old numbering system? For example, all of these pages link to "National Highway 2 (India)". Since Highway 2 is being moved to Highway 19, these all presumably need to be relinked to "National Highway 19 (India)". Otherwise people will receive information on the old Highway 61 (that is being moved to Highway 2) when they click the links on those articles that are actually intended to refer to Highway 19. How is all of that going to get done for the 50, and are the ones that don't get moved intended to be turned into redirects? Why would we retain an article on the old Highway 73, but not retain any article on the old Highway 2? Dekimasuよ! 23:43, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • That is the real challenge. I have moved all the articles (which I could figure out) on old highways to the new title of the form, National Highway XX (India)(old numbering). For now, that solves the issue of wrong links and readers will get a sense that it is old number. Most of those pages are linked with 100s of other articles. Editing all those articles manually is virtually impossible. Unless Wikipedia has a tool to automatically correct all those, it is going to be unresolved for a while. Is it possible to develop such a tool? About getting wrong links, the information on National Highways is already wrong in many aspects, even if we leave it as it is.
So I think it is better to create pages on new highways like this User:Marlisco/National_Highway_1_(India) and the problem can be resolved eventually when more and more editors become aware of the renumbering. Marlisco (talk) 04:46, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree that it's better so that all of the old highway information can be retained. The "cleanest" way to do this would be to figure out an alternative naming system for the new highways so that they aren't taking over the links of the old system until the links are cleaned. A bot might be able to process many of the changes, but I don't have much experience asking people to process things like that through bots. If the articles under the new naming are started at National Highway 1 (India, 2014–) (or similar) until the links are migrated, no moves will be necessary and time can be taken with the migration. Dekimasuよ! 19:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I would proceed as suggested by both the editors. The corrections made in few pages for the move, would have to be reverted before moving it to the National Highway XX (India)(old numbering). Marlisco (talk) 08:30, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In case anyone is looking for corroboration for the moves, I see a general Times of India article on the new numbers, but is there a complete list of the changes somewhere? Dekimasuよ! 07:27, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
That article is very old one from 2012. GOI is trying to update all the NH numberings. Please find RTI filed and response from MORTH [1]-- naveenpf (talk) 15:27, 26 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Space

edit

(India)(old numbering) should be (India) (old numbering), right? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:23, 27 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes. One always puts a space before a left parenthesis, except in math and programming. The two successive sets of parenthesis in the present naming scheme are terribly awkward to begin with, but if we must keep this format for now, there should definitely be a space between the two sets of parentheses.
