Talk:NEWS (band)

Former good articleNEWS (band) was one of the Music good articles, but it has been removed from the list. There are suggestions below for improving the article to meet the good article criteria. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

edit

The sections/catagories above had been removed. A NEWS article should only display information concerning the group as a whole or involving the majority of the group (unless it is relatively general in nature). Detailed, solo achievements and works of the members should not be in this article, but in the individual's respective Wikipedia article. Refer to articles of other Johnny's groups (like KinKi Kids) and you'll know what i mean. -- Frozencrumbz 08:59, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Renaming Page

edit

This article has been renamed many times and I believe that comments should be provided alongside clear reasons for the changes in this Talk Page. This will avoid people renaming it back and fro.

The official way to write the band's name is 'NEWS'; in capital letters. This band is not a trademark and therefore, rules regarding the naming of trademarks should not be applied to this article. WP:TITLE states that conventionally, this article should be named 'News (band)' but does not endorse this as a must-have rule.

I hereby propose to rename this page "NEWS (band)". If no one disagrees to this name in three days, then I will rename it. Until them, this issue will be open for discussion and no name changes shall be made. Frozencrumbz 03:00, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

See WP:MUSTARD#Capitalization. - Cyrus XIII 13:52, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Alright then. Even if rules regarding trademarks do apply to band names, it is clearly stated that exceptions are acceptable. If you look at NEWS' Japanese, Chinese, French, Indonesian, Thai, French, etc Wikipedia pages, all of them have applied capitalisation to the band's name. Isn't this proof that NEWS is globally recognised in its capitalised form? Why should the English Wikipedia defy common sense? Frozencrumbz 00:18, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Because deferring to exceptions that easily would defeat the purpose of having any sort of style guide in the first place. - Cyrus XIII 02:05, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Sayaendoregular.jpg

Image:Sayaendoregular.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

From the quick copyedit I did to the "History" section:

  • I added a {{fact}} tag in the first half of the section; it is important that you add a source for that statement before the GA review starts, as some people will not pass an article with any dispute/cleanup tags on it.
  Done
  • The first section (2005-2006) reads almost more like a list than prose...it pretty much lists singles and albums released, with news about the two underage drinkers mixed in. Would it be possible to give it a little more structure (by both summarizing the singles stuff without necessarily listing all of it, and moving the stuff about the drinkers to a separate paragraph)? I don't know how important it is to keep an intact "timeline" of when the various suspensions happened relative to when various singles came out.
Summarize it how? Also moving the members, I'll try it but I have a feeling it's going to look messy or whatever because not much was really reported and that would only be like two-three sentences, not a full paragraph.
  • On a similar note...I think the 2007-2008 section goes into more detail than necessary. We probably don't need to know the specifics of each concert, when they were postponed, etc.
Kept the thing about the first tour since that was event that marked their return.
  • Lots of mention of songs debuting "at the top of" charts...does this mean #1, or just somewhere high up? Might help to clarify (and to mix up the language a bit as well).
    • Actually, after reading the last sentence of this section, it does look like you meant they were all #1...still, it would be nice to be clearer on that from the beginning.
Should be clearer now.

Requested move

edit
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Moved to News (band). This looks unusual; I'd have preferred NEWS (band) if it was up to me. There was no agreement on whether NEWS qualifies as an acronym here, so the automatic capitalization expected for acronyms may not apply. This band's choice of a common word for their name prevents us from finding actual usage in English by Google searches, as explained by Labattblueboy. I have made NEWS into a redirect to News (disambiguation) though that might be considered further on the talk page. EdJohnston (talk) 03:49, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

NEWSNews (band) – Per MOS:TM and MOS:MUSIC. I'm agnostic as to whether NEWS should continue to redirect here or to News as an {{R from other capitalisation}}. Also not sure about the album NEWS Best. BDD (talk) 16:59, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Support the current title should be a disambiguation page, so redirect to the disambiguation page for news. -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 02:33, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Here is the second sentence from the article, "The group's name is an acronym based on the cardinal directions (North, East, West, South) and the members locations." As an acronym it should stay in all caps. For the same reason the album should stay where it is since it is based on the band's acronym title and not the word News.Aspects (talk) 16:20, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Support I support on the basis of MOS:TM but do mention that my search I was entirely unable to filter the band for general news and thus was unable to confirm whether the proposed name has usage. I wuodln't call the name an accronym as there is no demonstration the band has ever employed the name "North, East, West, South".--Labattblueboy (talk) 18:34, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, and redirect NEWS to the disambiguation page. Red Slash 01:46, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

GA Reassessment

edit
This discussion is transcluded from Talk:NEWS (band)/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

Article clearly no longer meets the good article criteria. It is incredibly outdated, no information beyond 2011 is sourced, it is not well written, it does not follow the Manual of Style, and various other obvious issues. I will allow a grace period of one week for improvements to this article. If concerns are not addressed by the end of that week, this article will be delisted. xplicit 06:23, 11 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
