Assessment

edit

The film needs a better explanation on how it relates to the manga. Is it an adaptation or an original screenplay? Also missing the list of awards and nominations from the film festivals. The characters, if connected to the manga series, should have links to their counterparts in the list of Mushishi characters.

@AngusWOOF: 1) In production I've tried to explain it: "created the screenplay by combining elements of the different stories present in the manga." 2) The first section of the reception covers the awards in prose; I don't feel like a table is neccessary because there's only 4 nominations 3) There's no list of characters for Mushishi due to its episodic nature; there's only this Mushishi#Characters and setting. Also, I'm frustrated to say that there's not much sources available to link the manga and the film, I guess. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 23:29, 3 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hm, forget what I said about lacking sources... I'm thrilled to say that [the A&M search machine helped me to find at least four more RSs that I'll try to incorporate: http://www.mania.com/mushishi-live-action_article_117254.html, http://comipress.com/article/2007/02/03/1449, http://www.tor.com/blogs/2009/09/mushishi-qthe-bugmasterq-and-the-cryptozoology-of-the-mind, http://twitchfilm.com/2006/12/second-trailer-for-bugmaster-aka-mushishi.html.
Okay, thanks for clarifying. I was looking at it again and the awards section does not need a table. And I agree the characters list doesn't need to be linked unless you want to just consider Ginko, who is the recurring protagonist besides a narrator. I was trying to figure out if the film picked some of the same stories as the manga since the anime episode list shows the corresponding manga chapter, much like how some of the other anime and manga live-actions would reference certain story arcs or do original screenplays. -AngusWOOF (talk) 23:50, 3 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
@AngusWOOF: Thanks. I'll (re)read the sources I already have and try to give further details. IIRC, sources didn't pay attention on it, though. Also, the corresponding chapter to each episode is very nice, but seems a bit of WP:OR too me, no? Gabriel Yuji (talk) 03:53, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've added three of the four (but all went to reception)... I was disappointed with the Comipress... And, in the end, I wasn't able to find much connecting the manga and the film. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 04:40, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I was going through the incomplete C checklist category and unless I missed something, looks like a B and I am assessing it as that. DragonZero (Talk · Contribs) 21:24, 10 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Where is it known as 'Bugmaster'? Outside Japan? I'm guessing it is outside Japan as the release section mentions that it was called 'Bugmaster' in the Toronto International Film Festival release
Yeah, outside Japan, but only in English-speaking countries, of course. Added. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • The lead could be expanded slightly to summarise the article better. I would recommend just a little on the plot of the movie and what critics thought about it?
For the plot, film's article usually don't give spoilers in the lead. I'm not sure I can add more without giving spoilers. For critics, "Many praised Odagiri's performance but critiqued the plot and mythology as confusing." is basicaly the consensus I could find among the reviewers. Other points are shared for most reviewers. I've added visual as something most of them agreed because only Brown criticized it. Do you think there's something more to add? Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Furthermore, "Mushishi received several nominations and awards at film festivals and was among the 100 highest-grossing films of 2007 in Japan." - is not mentioned in the body of the article (I would have thought that this would be mentioned in the reception section)
Well, it's there on the first paragraph of reception (see below). I'm not pretty sure on the usage of "several". Is that your concern? Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Would consider splitting the list in the Cast section into two columns, to create better flow of the article
Although I feel it's short, I believe it's a good idea. First, I though to include an image of Odagiri but it was too long to fit in the section so I've decided to add in "Reception". How do you feel about its inclusion? Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • "The sudden disappearances of certain characters were also consistent with the nature of that historical period" - it doesn't mention what historical period the film was set in
"Otomo describes the film as "a kind of fable", and as such, he chose the Meiji era as its setting because he felt it offered the best framing for the story." Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • "Sullivan, Schilling, and Elley criticized its soundtrack, especially the didgeridoos" - could be better worded Sullivan, Schilling, and Elley criticized its soundtrack, especially the use of didgeridoos?
Reworded. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • As mentioned above, nothing is mentioned about any awards won or 100 highest-grossing films of 2007 in the reception section
"In its opening weekend in Japan, Mushishi ranked eighth at the box office.[17] In total, it grossed $4,194,890, making it the 81st best gross of a film released in Japan in 2007.[18] It was nominated at the Venice Film Festival in the best film category and at the Sitges Film Festival in the best film, best special effects, and best soundtrack categories, winning in the latter two."

  • No dead links in the article, except from one but it doesn't appear in the article... strange
I've found two dead links and archived them. Thanks for pointing it. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:59, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think that's it. Overall this article is compact, well written and comprehensive. Nothing much to point out, hence the short review. I'll leave this on hold for seven days, please let me know when everything is addressed Jaguar 18:57, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for taking your time to review it! See me replies above and my edits and tell me what you think abou it. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Gabriel Yuji, it all looks great. Without creating a level 3 header and saying "blah blah blah" I'll just promote this   Jaguar 16:41, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
