Close paraphrasing

edit

I have received some criticism that articles I recently wrote were too closely paraphrased from reliable sources. I am tagging the page so others can review the text and we can work on improving any instances of close paraphrasing. Ocaasi t | c 14:11, 28 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've taken a look and done some rewriting and (mostly) trimming of material. Any time an article, or large parts of an article, is derived from a single source it becomes very difficult to reword acceptably, and especially to build a narrative structure that doesn't duplicate that source. Perhaps some of the "Further reading" links can be used to expand and rebuild what I've removed?
I'm still not particularly happy with the "Post-Mubarak" section, as it's basically just a quote farm with very little of Wikipedia's voice expressed - but I'm not entirely sure what (if anything) to do about it. I'll leave the tag in place for now, perhaps someone else will have ideas on restructuring that section. Franamax (talk) 20:04, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've removed the tag for two reasons. Firstly I don't think close paraphrase is quite the right tag for this situation. Secondly I rewrote a couple of quotes in my own words and I don't think what's left is excessive. This is a person known for their views and so I think it's an easy argument to make that more quotes than your average biography is both appropriate and fair use. I don't know how to do this, but I'd appreciate if, as a matter of urgency, you would include the following (taken verbatim from Front Line Defenders, a human rights support organisation): On 31 May 2012, human rights defender Ms Mona Seif received a summons to appear before the Public Prosecutor in Cairo on Saturday, 2 June. She was informed that she was a suspect in the arson attack on the headquarters building of presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Mr Ahmed Shafiq. The fire in the Dokki neighbourhood of Cairo, which did not do serious damage to the building, occurred on the evening of 29 May, as people gathered in Tahrir Square to protest the outcome of the first round of presidential elections.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.7.48.1 (talk) 11:37, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
