Michigan territory was a part of Quebec and a member of Parliament
editPrince Edward Duke of Kent lived in Quebec City (Known as the Prince of Quebec)from 1791-1793 this was when Michigan territory was a part of Quebec and a member of Parliament. Detroit was transferred to Quebec under the Quebec Act of 1774 . It was then the third-largest city in the Province of Quebec, after Montreal and Quebec. 1792 Detroit, including settlements on both sides of the river, holds its first election, sending three representatives to the Parliament of Upper Canada. The Act Against Slavery, 1793, an anti-slavery act passed in Upper Canada. The Act was created partially in response to Loyalist refugees who brought slaves with them. Michigan Territory was a part of Upper Canada from 1790-1796 Under British rule Michigan remained a part of Canada. And again in August 1812- Until September 1813 . The British retained control of Detroit and Michigan after the American Revolution. When Quebec split into Lower and Upper Canada in 1791, Michigan was part of Kent County, Upper Canada. It held its first democratic elections in August 1792 to send delegates to the new provincial parliament at Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake).
Western District was one of four districts of the Province of Quebec created in 1788 in the western reaches of the Montreal District which were later detached in 1791 to create the new colony of Upper Canada. Known as Hesse District (named after Hesse in Germany) until 1792, it was abolished in 1849.
Western District Former District in Upper Canada
the capital was moved to York (now Toronto) to protect it from American attacks. Upper Canada’s first Lieutenant Governor was General John Graves Simcoe. As Detroit was still occupied British territory in 1792, it formed part of the District at the time. In the first election to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, three former or current residents of Detroit were elected.[2] This anomaly, together with other occupied places at Fort Mackinac and Fort Miami, were finally vacated upon the ratification of the Jay Treaty in 1795; they were withdrawn from the District in June 1796.
The French Revolution erupted in 1789, and events on Saint Pierre and Miquelon were not immune to the twists and turns that ensued. In the early spring of 1793, news of the trial and execution of Louis XVI reached the islands. All royal symbols were subsequently removed from Saint Pierre and Miquelon. The Acadian population of Miquelon were loyal to French royalty, and decided to leave the colony for the Magdalen Islands, a small archipelago just north of Nova Scotia.
(During The War of the First Coalition.) was a set of wars that several European powers fought between 1792 and 1797 initially against the constitutional Kingdom of France and then the French Republic that succeeded it. In May 1793, after France had declared war on Great Britain as part of the War of the First Coalition, a British force attacked the islands under Captain William Affleck of Halifax. The seasonal fishermen and captured French military personnel were deported in 1793, followed by the 950 residents in 1794, who were shipped to Halifax and held for two years.
British fishermen took possession of the islands. Only 2 years later, French forces under Rear-Admiral de Richery attacked the islands in 1796, sinking 80 British vessels.
The District, after detaching territory that would be part of the new London District, was reconstituted as the Western District by an Act of the Parliament of Upper Canada in 1798. It was described as consisting of "...the Counties of Essex and Kent together with so much of this Province as is not included within any other district thereof..."[3] The counties were described as consisting of the following:
Counties of the Western District (1798)[4] County of Kent County of Essex The townships of
Dover Chatham Camden (distinguished by being called Camden West) the Moravian tract of land,[b] called Orford (distinguished by Orford North and South) Howard Harwich Raleigh Romney Tilbury (divided into east and west) with the township on the River Sinclair, occupied by the Shawney Indians,[c] together with the islands in the lakes Erie and Sinclair wholly or in greater part opposite thereto... - Thanks. Editors in the range of this IP have a penchant for removing material from articles when they come across a 'citation needed' template, reflexively "fixing" the problem without improving the encyclopedia. JohnInDC (talk) 11:44, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
