Merged in
editI have integrated all the material from [[Methuselah's Children (short story)]], which I propose should be deleted. This novel is a short novel, but it is definitely longer than a short story, though it might be called a novella, depending on word count. It has been published as a book with this title. Time Dilation
editCorrected the second-to-last paragraph in the plot summary. Changed from:
Because of time dilation effects, seventy-five years have passed on Earth.
to
The Families return to the Solar System to discover that their travels have taken seventy-five Earth-years.
The story makes it clear that 'Planet of the Apes'-style time dilation has not happened. The Families just spent 75 years traveling under a regular drive and living on the two planets. The faster-than-light travel time amounted to nothing. Also cleared up ambiguous phrasing. -C
Reversion
editI have deleted an addition, that said among other things that citizens under the Covenant had to be armed. This is untrue; Heinlein is explicit that Lazarus is very much the exception by wearing a blaster. His wearing it is his business, not that of others, but given that this society very much frowns on violence (see "Coventry"), it seems consistent There is also a claim that human breeding is controlled under the Covenant, again, that is news to me. Quotes would be welcome from anyone taking a contrary position.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:51, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Deus ex Machina
editRemoved the segment suggesting deus ex machina and indicating that they had 'been driven too close to the sun'.
Checking the book, it's clearly stated that they chose to aim for the sun specifically because Libby's device was already built and had been brought with them, and would work best closest to the sun.
"You should head right straight down for the Sun."
"For the Sun? For Pete's sake, why?"
"I tried to tell you when I first saw you. It's because of the space drive you asked me to develop."
"But, Andy, we haven't got it."
"Yes, we have. Here." Libby shoved the satchel he had been carrying toward Lazarus.
