Date and details of birth/childhood
editA German historian speaks out on Berlitz's roots in Germany. He says that his research made it clear that Berlitz was born in Muehringen, near the town of Horb am Neckar and close to the Black Forest region, on April 14, 1852. So he was a citizen of the then Kingdom of Wuerttemberg. According to this source, his birthname was David Berlizheimer; he was apprenticed to a clockmaker in the town of Mergentheim before he emigrated, age 18 and pennyless, to America. He joined many people from Wuerttemberg who, for economic reasons, left their native region at that time. The management of Berlitz, however, insists that Maximilian Delphinius Berlitz was born 1847 in Wuerttemberg.
But you cannot say "near Württemberg, Germany" as Württemberg is a region (and part of the German state Baden-Württemberg). It would be as if you said "near California, U.S.A."
