Inaccuracies
editKaranemacedar claimed in this edit that there inaccuracies in the article. I think it would be best that rather than reverting outright, all the editors involved here work out which parts should stay and which parts should be deleted. Altamel (talk) 22:03, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you - I couldn't agree more. I'm just very wary of anyone deleting significant amounts of sourced information while claiming that it's inaccurate without, say, explaining why it's wrong or attempting to fix it. Especially when said deletions remove categories and/or break templates. Hopefully Karanemacedar lets us in on the details here soon! NekoKatsun (talk) 22:14, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

- Karanemacedar posted a message on their user talk page. I'm not sure what can be done about the domestic dispute, but I look into the issue of the photograph. Altamel (talk) 22:47, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Karanemacedar I looked into the page history, and about a year ago, a picture named File:Marty makalu2.jpg was added to the article. According to the upload logs, no image with that name has ever been uploaded to Wikipedia, so that must have been the reason why the picture was removed from the article: it wasn't formatted correctly and was displaying as a redlink. However, I did find a different picture, File:Marty Schmidt in the Himalayas.jpg . Is this Schmidt's picture, and if so, would you like us to include it? Altamel (talk) 22:54, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- @NekoKatsun, in the meantime, Karanemacedar also asked that the other mountain photos be removed, would you agree with removing the five images underneath the Summits section header? After all, the Image use policy discourages image galleries if they don't add to the article. Altamel (talk) 23:00, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Altamel, I've removed the excess mountain images. I left the smaller ones throughout the article. I also tidied up just a bit, I hope that's okay (this is mostly directed towards @Sequoiadiangelo); I could find a source stating that Denali was survived by his sister, but as this article's about Marty, I thought it best to just remove the 'survived by' bit altogether. I also re-added the mention of his gear being redistributed, but tried to keep it neutral by not mentioning by whom. How's it look now? NekoKatsun (talk) 15:41, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
- @NekoKatsun, thanks! In my opinion the article is much more balanced now. Altamel (talk) 15:46, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

About edit warring and conflicts of interest
editSome serious problems have manifested ont his page, and as a result it is now protected from editing for a while. The purpose of protection is twofold: one purpose is to stop disruption to the article, the other is to allow all parties involved in the dispute a chance to discuss the matter instead of edit warring and leaving nasty comments in edit sumarries. If any of that behavior resumes, from any party, after the protection expires, blocks will be issued on all offending parties. This is not how we do things here.
And on that point, it seems clear that pretty much everyone involved in this had some sort of personal relationship with this person. Wikipedia strongly discourages users from editing in areas where they have an inherent conflict of interest for exactly this reason. It leads to this sort of irresponsible and obnoxious behavior in articles and requires administrative resources and community time to assess the damage and make needed fixes. It is preferable that those with a close assosciation to the subject of an article propose their suggested edits here, on the article's talk page, so that other, uninvolved users may review them and decide if they are appropriate. At the moment, you don't have any choice in the matter due to the protection so this is an opportunity for you all see how to do things properly instead of what you have been doing. Please feel free to use any of the many forms of dispute resolution available to you.
Hope that helps. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:01, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- The protection has ended and the IP edits have started again. There has been no discussion of the material, and the WP:COI and WP:OWN issues remain. I have removed the current version of the contentious biographical material [1] since none of it was sourced. I will attempt to restore what I can source, and of course, any other editors may restore what they can source. Meters (talk) 03:46, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
- I have not restored any of this material. I have been able to verify some of the information about his first and second wives, and family, but given the COI infighting (and lawsuit over his will) I'm afraid that restoring any of it will just start things up again. Opinions?
- Some of the biographical material removed (move to New Zealand, citizenship, guiding company, etc.) should still be sourced and restored, regardless of the family info. Meters (talk) 20:54, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
- A word of warning to anyone taking this on, much of the online material may be based on Wikipedia. Meters (talk) 20:55, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
- There's some uncertainty about when he moved to New Zealand. The removed material said that he moved to Australia in 1988, and lived in New York, Australia and New Zealand from 1988 to 2001, making his permanent home in New Zealand in 2001, but http://www.smh.com.au/world/k2-avalanche-father-and-son-killed-20130729-2qvri puts his move to New Zealand as 1998.
