I thought that designing engines for supersonic airflow was a problem that still hadn't been solved, and tht all jet engines required subsonic airflow, hence one major need for complex inlet systems to slow the intake air down. Maybe I am thinking of overall supersonic flow, but this seems weird to me. I thought supersonic air was the enemy of all jet engines.
