Didn't linkify Halifax, as none of the articles in the disambiguator are right. If it was linked, people may assume the article is there when it isn't. Not sure about this. Anyone? Kirun 23:06 Apr 26, 2003 (UTC)

Puerto Rican banks into US

I moved all Puerto Rican banks into the United States category; Puerto Rico is a United States Commonwealth, not an independent country. To compensate, I added which state/territory/whatever the main HQ of the bank was located in.

Indian banks categorization

Banks in India require a special categorization, at least two, namely, nationalized banks (major equity owned by the Government of India), and private sector banks. India also has several other types of Banks, but to begin with these two categorization should serve the purpose.
I also find that the word "publicly owned" requires clarification - in India "publicly owned" means owned by the Government, where this phrase generally conveys the meaning that the entity is a corporate body with equity held by the general public, and conveys a sense of private ownership. In view of this, for a wider audience, the categorization of Banks in India should be done at least under two sections: 1) Nationalized Banks, and 2) Private Banks.

Regarding [1] [2] [3] - User:Alanmak has ignored the fact that even though Taiwan is dictated by the official Wikipedia NPOV policy for Chinese-related topics that it should not be used synonymously with the modern state/régime/government/polity of Republic of China, for the purpose of listing it's generally agreed upon that it should be listed under #T. The underlying rationale is that most readers would be looking for it by its common (but not entirely official) short name. A hyperlink from #C is already adequate to help readers locate it.

As for Hong Kong, he has effectively disregarded the constitutional status of special administrative region with respect to the administrative division hierarchy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) (Cf. Articles 30 and 31 of the 1982 Constitution of the PRC). In his edits he has kept asserting his point of view that special administrative regions are ordinary subnational entities, comparable to provinces or equivalence of the PRC. He's also over-did that reordering of the banks according to alphabetical order was also reverted. — Instantnood 08:09, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Chinese names of banks

Would it be possible to add the Chinese names of banks in China to each bank listed under China? For some reason the Chinese name often has no relation to the English name (eg HSBC = 汇丰) and it would be nice to have a list somewhere, as it seems excessive to have two lists. m.e. 11:07, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Confusing Organisation of the List

It's not clear to me how this list is organised (in particular, which country should a bank be listed in under) For instance, there are several banks listed under UAE that (whilst they may well have branches and/or offices there) aren't 'from' the UAE (examples include - but are certainly not limited to - Bank of America, Bank of China, Deutsche Bank etc. etc.)

In addition, some banks (e.g. Citibank, Credit Suisse etc) operate globally - it's not entirely clear where they should be listed. (Credit Suisse is a particularly good example - despite the name, is arguably more American than Swiss these days) 87.194.60.87 (talk) 18:51, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Good point. I would suggest that only banks incorporated in a country be listed under the country name. This would remove branches of foreign banks, but would permit the listing of locally incorporated subsidiaries of foreign banks. Implementing this distinction, however, would require a great deal of expertise to identify whether, say Deutsche Bank, was operating in Country X thorugh a branch or subsidiary. It would also require referring to the subsidiaries by their local name and their own entries, including a link to the parent, rather than just a redirect to the parent. I just am tired to move Turkey into Europe Section of the article. Please keep that there cause Turkish Economics are more similar to European system with its stock exchange, foreign exchange, mortgage systems and so on...

Since this article is too large, and since Wikipedia Standards does not recommend large articles, do you all think that is is better to divide it in to sub-articles? Split

Start the Split

The overwhelming majority favor a split, at the very least, by continent. If it does not offend anyone, I will start working on that task right now. At a later date, we can split the continental information into individual countries. I will leave the main article intact but will start on:

• List of banks in Asia
• List of banks in Europe
• List of banks in Oceania
• List of International banking institutions
