Response to "Scope?"

edit

Dear Hoary - Thanks for the comment. In the entry that existed, I detected only one of the women photographers without a Wikipedia entry (i.e., redlinked), and that was Jean Ferro. I left her in just in case anyone felt strongly about her. I did not add any redlinked photographers, and did not have enough time to add reasons for including each photographer like the nice page Wikipedia:WikiProject History of photography/Japanese photographers does. -- Woodmanbiographer 14:26, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Scope?

edit

I strongly suggest doing what List of photographers does: removing all redlinks and limiting the scope to photographers who have articles. If you don't, you're going to have real obscurities, self-nominations, buddy-buddy nominations, hoaxes, etc.

A list with redlinks can be useful, but I'd put it outside article space and model it on Wikipedia:WikiProject History of photography/Japanese photographers -- in which the reason for inclusion of every photographer is clearly stated. Incidentally, here are some women:

  • Hiromix, b. 1976 (ヒロミックス)
  • Imai Hisae, b. 1931 (今井寿恵, いまい ひさえ)
  • Ishiuchi Miyako, b. 1947 (石内都, いしうち みやこ)
  • Kida Aya, b. 1974 (木田綾, きだ あや)
  • Kodama Fusako, b. 1945 (児玉房子, こだま ふさこ)
  • Kon Michiko, b. 1955 (今道子, こん みちこ)
  • Kotani Yasuko, b. 1962 (小谷泰子, こたに やすこ)
  • Matsumoto Michiko, b. 1950 (松本路子, まつもと みちこ)
  • Miyamoto Tomoko, b. 1960 (宮本とも子, みやもと ともこ)
  • Nagashima Yurie, b. 1973 (長島有里枝, ながしま ゆりえ)
  • Ninagawa Mika, b. 1972 (蜷川実花, にながわ みか)
  • Okanoue Toshiko (b. 1928) (岡上淑子, おかのうえ としこ)
  • Orihara Kei, b. 1948 (折原恵, おりはら けい)
  • Sasamoto Tsuneko, b. 1918 (笹本恒子, ささもと つねこ)
  • Shimada Yoshiko, b. 1959 (嶋田美子, しまだ よしこ)
  • Shiomi Mieko, 1909-1984 (汐見美枝子, しおみ みえこ)
  • Tokiwa Toyoko, b. 1930 (常盤とよ子, ときわ とよこ)
  • Yamazawa Eiko, 1899-1995 (山沢栄子, やまざわ えいこ)
  • Yoneda Tomoko, b. 1965 (米田知子, よねだ ともこ)
  • Yoshida Ruiko, b. 1938 (吉田ルイ子, よしだ るいこ)

(All with surnames first.) I've probably missed a few. -- Hoary 09:32, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate entries

edit

I've reverted the wholesale removal of duplicate entries. They're one of the necessities of lists by nationality, when individuals have strong associations with more than one country. Of course, if the person is associated with only one nationality, there's no reason to list them twice. Maybe some of them are unnecessary but, if so, they should probably be removed on a case-by-case basis. Sionk (talk) 17:57, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

They should not be listed by nationality for the reason you stated. It leads to duplicate entries. See List of Photographers. --Alexf(talk) 18:15, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

"Significant contributions"

edit

Women have made significant contributions to photography since its inception.

Er, significant according to what criteria, or as adjudged by whom?

I'd have trouble formulating my own criteria, let alone persuading others of their value. But if somebody were to stick a gun to my head: "Cut the speechifying, Hoary, and simply say how many of the books in that photo are by women who've made significant contributions to photography, fast", then I'd say "About half of them".

My gut feelings are (i) that well over half of the people listed in the current page didn't really make "significant contributions" to photography, and that (ii) it's an impossible condition for entry to this list. If a photographer is noted for her photography and is female and gets an article, she should get listed. (The strange phrasing of the first part is to erect a barrier to prevent the automatic inclusion of celebs whose photographs have occasionally been published here and there. Though I'd certainly admit űber-celeb K Kardashian: there's a whole book of her selfies; if you don't like them then maybe civilization is down the tubes but they could well be a significant contribution to the photographic aspect of this very process.) -- Hoary (talk) 07:26, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Can we illustrate this article (and the national sub-articles) with freely-licensed or out-of-copyright images by the photographers listed? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:18, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
