List of Mario video games → List of video games featuring Mario –
Proposed by: ArtistScientist (talk · contribs)
As the concept of a "Mario game" is subjective, and this list includes games such as F1 Race, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Super Smash Bros., which are not commonly considered as falling into this category, I propose the article name be changed to a less contentious one. ArtistScientist (talk) 22:46, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment this is a list of games where Mario is a significant character (playable, antagonist or other prominent), not including cameos and references, and that should be mentioned in the article. Salvidrim! 23:00, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
- Support: Many of the entries aren't "Mario games", but they do feature him. The proposed article name is more clearly descriptive of the list content. — Bility (talk) 16:43, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Cameos
editI think this list should include any games where the character Mario (not pictures of him or verbal references to him) makes an appearance. So cameos should be included in this. My reason for this is that any distinction between "cameos" and "appearances" tends to be hazy. Many early NES and Game Boy games had Mario in a meaningless but visible appearance. There's the example of Alleyway in which you only see your spacecraft, but Mario is supposedly inside it. This is a very minor role, but he is still featured. Therefore I think the criterion for exclusion should not be someing that we label a "cameo", because there's a range of degrees of significance of an appearance; what should exlude a game from this list is when the character is external to the events inside the game. ArtistScientist (talk) 22:26, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
- I think cameos are not a bad idea. When the Mario character is present in the game (as opposed to being referred to). Thus would include games like Super Punch-Out, DKC2, etc. Salvidrim! 22:38, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
A Link to the Past
editWas there a portrait of Mario in this game? I know there was in Ocarina of Time but I don't know about ALttP. ArtistScientist (talk) 22:54, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, shameless plug time: see this Youtube link. One of my own videos (eh!), at 1m05s, you can clearly see a Mario portrait hanging on the back wall of the house. There are a few of those scattered across the game. I'm sure a RS can be found if strictly needed... :) Salvidrim! 23:00, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Art Games?
editMany of the games, such as Mario Paint, lead to the article, and are described as an Art Game. It's obvious by the name what was meant by labeling them as such, but the article lead to is about the other type of art game, rather than a more content-creation type game, which games like Mario Paint are not. I don't know what to reccommend, but in the state it's in, it's not really accurate. Not an S (talk) 17:44, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Various possibilites: Video game art, Art game, Video games as art. None are clearly about content creation-oriented games. Salvidrim! 17:57, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Games like Mario Paint are usually called "non-games" in my experience (Note: don't let the name fool you. Some consider non-games to be a kind of game). They are game-like but they are also app-like. -Thibbs (talk) 06:14, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Ports, re-releases, etc.
editWhat I meant to do by originally not including ports was to avoid having to list all of the computer-like platforms the older games were released on. See Donkey Kong's platform list... that would get unwieldy. However, releases under slightly different titles (like the Classic NES ones, the SMB All-Stars 25th Anniversary one, or the Kaetteika version) are a different case.
To go back on the Donkey Kong example, the Arcade original, the NES re-release and the distinct G&W version are the entries currently there; the other releases were purely Arcade ports, not proper "releases" of the game in the context of this list, thus haven't all been individually listed. That's the way I see it, anyways. It only really matters for the Arcade ports, the rest is not under question, I believe.
We've also not included the various digital/Virtual Console releases, as they too were merely ports of the games, emulated versions and nothing more, for similar reasons. Salvidrim! 05:15, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- But why exclude the NES Classics Series while including All-Stars 25th Anniversary, Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong 64? Those are all emulated versions. ArtistScientist (talk) 06:39, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- Because otherwise the rule of "ignore arcade ports" isn't applied across the board. I guess the only issue to be avoided here are ports of the Arcade games that are contemporary, not later re-released.
- Although in truth, this is meant to be a list of all released games where Mario is featured; whether a game was ported or not is irrelevant. A port is, by definition, only one game, no matter how many consoles it appears on. Re-releases (All-Stars 25th Anniv., Classic NES) are not ports; they're games in their own right, thus should be included.
- I know I may not be making much sense, but I am not even sure myself what I really think would be most beneficial to the list.
- Soooo... all in all, I think the initial solution was the best -- ignore ports, but not re-releases. Salvidrim! 09:20, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- What would you say differentiates a port from a re-release? Whether it has a new title? Whether it was released in a different console generation? This all seems unnecessarily complicated, and the definitions of these terms are highly subjective. We don't want the content of the article to be based on our opinions. I honestly wouldn't see a problem with including every version/release of each game in the list. Then the reader doesn't have to second-guess anything. ArtistScientist (talk) 10:41, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hm. I'd be fine with it too, for the sake of completeness, but daaamn would it get long for the first few games. It used to be a single listing for the game then all the platform it was released on, but that doesn't work so well for the sortable format we had to go with. Salvidrim! 18:48, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks for the hard work. Just two things -- make sure they're in year order! And secondly I think there were four Classic NES re-releases, they should be named appropriately and linked to the Classic NES series article. I'll try to see if I have time to take care of it tommorow. :) Salvidrim! 04:06, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Nov 2011 "merge"
editSalvidrim, how could you wipe out List of Mario video games by genre?, the most comprehensive list of games [other than localisations] on the web, neatly arranged under sections and a table of contents by rank and not by stave, by divers developer and hardware, many models the latter whereof hav still not gone into this list? There were 29 Donkey Kongs, 25 Jr.s, and 11 Golfs. You altogether forgot the Mini Classics and G&W Ball, Korokoro Party 1 & 2, two BSes, and the multicarts, each of which had its own page. One can no longer see which G&W minigames had Mario. There are no LE releases (SMB, Dr.M, MKDD, DK).
But I had forgotten two Dr.Ms, SMW Barcode Battler II, Pushmo, Print World, PiCTOBiTs, Calculator, Clock: http://www.mariowiki.com/Games. What I had wanted was to add the Capcom and Konami arcades: Roulette, Unkurukai, Janjan Land, Korokoro Catcher, Coin World, Whirling Carnival, GP DX; and the nonlicensed games of note: Lunar Magic, Super Mario X, Super Mario Bros. Crossover, Somari, Dian Shi Mali, Kart Fighter, Crazy Kong, Mario Bros. II, Super Mario War, Mari0, Mario Bobble, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Dendy (console) rips, Super Mario IV, MARIO BROS, Contra 168-in-1, JUMP AND JOURNEY, FC Twin games, Homebrew (video games) ports (iPod game etc.), ROM image hacks (Mario Forever, Kaizo Mario, Brutal Mario, Super Mario Bros. Frustration, etc.; but not spinoff-clones or "Mushroom Kingdom games" (maybe under a See also link) such as Secret Maryo Chronicles, Great Giana Sisters, Carlo Adventure Legend, Syobon Action, Medical Hospital and Pandamar, Teletubbies, Super Pikachu Bros, SuperTux, TuxKart, SuperTuxKart, X-Play's sketches and segments#Mod This; or other Marios such as Mario 8. -lysdexia 02:21, 7 April 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.64.170.58 (talk)
- I have made sure that none of the entries on either of the three pre-merge lists wasn't included in this list, and I've just verified that this is indeed the case.
- As for the other "games": unofficial/unlicensed titles are already covered at {{Unofficial Mario media}}. Other licensed games where Mario is a character can and should be added to this list or discussed on this talk page. :) ·Salvidrim!· ✉ 02:38, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
You verified nothing. My list of games after "You altogether forgot" still stands out. Make that 31 Donkey Kongs: TRS-80 1 and 3. The template you gave me was the same template I gave you! It's nowhere comprehensive (so they aren't "already covered"), not linked to in the main pages, and those games belong in the main list. Are you always this incompetent? -lysdexia 23:34, 15 April 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.64.170.58 (talk)
Protection
editAlthough I don't know how to go about it, this article needs protection. It is always being turned into a wishlist for vandals, with non-existent games frequently being added. ArtistScientist (talk) 04:19, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Tuper Tario Tros merge
editTuper Tario Tros is a spin-off. How about put examples of spin-offs into the List of video games featuring Mario and put Tuper Tario Tros there too? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qwertyxp2000 (talk • contribs) 21:46, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
- List of video games featuring Mario is a listing in the form of a sortable table as a solution to a merge of three separate lists (Mario games by genre, platform and year), it only links to the relevant games. There is no merge to be had. I added Tuper Tario Tros to the list. ☺ · Salvidrim! · ✉ 23:00, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Mario features where?
editWhere does Mario appeal in games such as Tetris (GameBoy), Super Scope 6 (SNES) or Donkey Kong 64 (N64)
I played all extensively, and don't recall every seeing any depiction of Mario. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Craigthomas1 (talk • contribs) 19:47, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
- Tetris (Game Boy): In the 2-Player mode, one Game Boy is "Mario" and the other is "Luigi." Depending on which character is representing you, a Mario or Luigi head appears in the upper-right corner of the gameplay screen. At the end of each match, your character will be either jumping (you won) or crying (you lost) in the foreground, while your opponent is seen in the background. [1],[2]
- Super Scope 6: In LazerBlazer type A, Mario will occasionally fly by the screen, being chased by a Koopa kid (Lemmy, perhaps). Shoot down the Koopa kid for a bonus.[3]
- Donkey Kong 64: You must play Mario in an in-game version of the original Donkey Kong game for at least one of the Golden Bananas. ☺ · Salvidrim! · ✉ 23:17, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Donkey Kong for Game Boy default position
editThis edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
Donkey Kong on Game Boy released in 1994 and should be moved in first position in 1994 games. This game is different enoght from original Donkey Kong and takes many mechanics from previous titles released with Mario before 1994 so I think it should be moved in default view order.
From https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Donkey_Kong_(Game_Boy) "contains puzzle elements" "Donkey Kong is loosely based on the 1981 arcade game of the same name" "It features gameplay elements from Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Super Mario Bros. 2." PeterSzczepaniak (talk) 11:22, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

Missing Japanese Gameboy advance games and the WarioWare series

List of video games featuring Mario → List of Mario video games – The discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of video games featuring Mario indicated support for a move from the current title. 2601:241:300:B610:7C10:1A8B:43AD:BCB2 (talk) 04:40, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose What is a Mario game? Wikipedia should not be deciding that. It's too debatable. When you start to introduce criteria it's no longer objective. The list in its current form is neutral, as it should be. Ozdarka (talk) 11:12, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- The issue seems to be regarding the inclusion games in which Mario only makes a cameo, such as SSX on Tour. A Mario game is a game that's released as part of the Mario franchise, so that would exclude games like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and Minecraft: Wii U Edition. 2601:241:300:B610:7C10:1A8B:43AD:BCB2 (talk) 14:58, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- A Mario game would be a game that is considered to be a part of the Mario franchise, or one of its immediate sub-franchises by either Nintendo themselves (ie. is the game under the Mario franchise in Super Smash Bros.), or by reliable news sources. This is objective beyond a reasonable doubt. Essentially, List of Mario video games would be talking about the franchise, not the character, and there is precedent, see List of Star Fox video games. (Oinkers42) (talk) 20:54, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose If the character Mario was seen in any games, it should be on the list. Some might not consider Donkey Kong a Mario game, even though it was his first appearance, and he was the player controlled character. Mario games aren't just Mario jumping around on turtles and such. The list shows how many games have had this notable character used in them. Dream Focus 04:28, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
- Strongly oppose this move without a consensus-supported definition of the new scope - What is a "Mario video game"? What is a "significant appearance"? What is a "significantly-related subfranchise"? Is Donkey Kong (video game) not a Mario game? Yoshi's Safari? What about SSX On Tour or Luigi's Mansion 3? Golf (1984 video game), Wrecking Crew (video game), Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally (peep that coverart), Super Smash Bros., Yakuman DS, Itadaki Street Wii, NES Remix? This should not be moved/rescoped unless there is consensus on what said new scope actually represents. Ben · Salvidrim! ✉ 04:46, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Scope of "Mario video game"
edit- Comment - One possibility for a scope could be "video games in which Mario is (a) a playable character and/or (b) mentioned in the title of the game." This wouldn't completely remove edge cases - I could imagine there being cases of games where Mario is playable in a trivial or cameo capacity (e.g. possibly in a WarioWare game) - but I think it'd be a fairly objective standard that significantly matches people's expectations as to what constitutes a "Mario game". ModernDayTrilobite (talk) 14:32, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- I think if there is to be a reduced scope there should be only one criterion: Mario being in the title. List of video games titular to Mario might be appropriate in this case. The criterion of Mario being a playable character would bring in all kinds of subjectivity for titles like Yoshi's Island, Alleyway, Golf, Dr. Mario, Game & Watch Gallery, etc. Ozdarka (talk) 15:06, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- I'd be amenable to that option as well. My goal with the "playable" criterion was mainly to have a rationale to include Donkey Kong, but it does also open up the door to a lot of gray areas, so I'm willing to axe it if that seems to be the favored option. In January of 2021 the Tennis entry was edited to simply state that it was released on arcade, rather than clarifying that it was released as part of the PlayChoice-10 cabinet as it once had, this sent me on an hour long goose chase looking for a game that didn't exist before discovering this fact in the edit history. My edit request is that the arcade release of Tennis, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario be edited to clarify that they were released for the PlayChoice cabinets, rather than on standalone cabinets, preferably in notes. My edit request is that for the games on the PlayChoice systems (Tennis, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario) a note be added to the word arcade in the system column of the table to indicate that they were not released on standalone arcade systems, but rather for the PlayChoice system.
