A William Young is mentioned as having been governor between Leybourne and Macartney's tenures. This probably refers to Sir William Young, 1st Baronet, who had been governor of Dominica in 1770, and not his son, the second baronet. Beatson records Macartney as directly succeeding Leybourne, as does Woodcock. But given Leybourne died on 16 April 1775, and Macartney did not receive his commission until 7 February 1776, it maybe that Young was temporarily acting governor to fill the gap until London was notified and Macartney could arrive in post.
