editThis list should include Abdullah Al-Rashidi, competing for Kuwait in '96, '00, '04, '08, '12, and '20, and competing as Independent Olympic Athlete in '16, with bronze medals in skeet shooting in '16 and '20. See sources at: https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Abdullah_Al-Rashidi 104.232.180.218 (talk) 22:17, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
The list is missing Jayna Hefford, Canadian women's ice hockey player. She's played in 5 Winter Olympics (1998-2014), winning 4 golds and 1 silver. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:FEA8:2B5E:E300:3055:F49F:A176:961C (talk) 05:28, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for this article. My friend Nikola Girke just competed in sailing (RS:X windsurfer) at the 2020 Olympics. When will this article be updated to include the Tokyo Olympics?
According to http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/pl/j-michael-plumb-1.html, J. Michael Plumb competed in 1960, 64,68, 72, 76, 84, 92, not 1964/76 and 1984/92 as described on this page. I have no independent confirmation of either so will leave it here for community response.

I miss at least seven more winter athletes with 6 Appearances: Raimo Helminen (FIN) Ice Hockey 1984 - 2002, Georg Hackl (FRG/GER) Luge 1988 - 2006, Markus Prock (AUT) Luge 1984 - 2002, Sergey Chepikov (URS/EUN/RUS) Biathlon & Cross-Country 1988 - 2006, Albert Demchenko (EUN/RUS) Luge 1992 - 2010, Marco Büchel (LIE) Alpine Ski 1992 -2010 and Harri Kirvesniemi (FIN) Cross-Country 1980 - 1998.
Source: http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/
The seven names above (left by an unsigned talker) have now been added. This brings the number of athletes on this list from 42 last week to 79 today.--Crabbylucy (talk) 04:58, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Today I had added a section on five-time Olympians but perhaps this should be split off into a new page since it's getting long? It's meant to be a list of people in long-competing Olympians in sports other than things like Equestrianism and Shooting, like Dara Torres and Oksana Chusovitina. One problem - I've so far found about ten rowers who've competed at five Olympics and there could be lots more. How they do it given rowing's demands is beyond me, but that's not the point. The point is, the five-time Olympian list could become real long even if equestrian, shooting, sailing, and fencing are excluded --Crabbylucy (talk) 04:58, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- check Russian version - I found at least 78 athletes with 6 appearances (for example in table tennis J-M Saive and Zoran Primorac also competed 1988-2008, not only Persson). Also there is one famous chinese shooter to compete 6 times. I used for 6 appearances althabetical order. Hope you can read cyryllic :) BTW thanks to several persons i've not noticed. --85.140.192.142 (talk) 14:32, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi, i'm the unsigned talker from above...one more with 6 appearances is Jochen Behle (FRG/GER) cross-country skiing 1980 - 1998. There are circa 60 more winter athletes with 5 appearances! Notable is figure-skating pair Margarita Drobiasko/Povilas Vanagas (LTU) 1992 - 2006, alpine & cross-country skier Arturo Kinch (CRC) 1980 - 1988, 2002 - 2006 (26 years!), and short-tracker Evgenia Radanova (BUL) 1994 - 2010 (she also competed at summer games 2004 in cycling = total of 6 appearances). Nathalie Santer (ITA), Biathlon, wife of Ole-Einar Bjorndalen, like him she has 5 appearances (from 1992 - 2006). 79.254.41.8 (talk) 20:39, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- For instance, have at least 17 Italian athletes with at least 5 appearances. See here --Soquette (talk) 23:02, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Wow. That's a lot of five-time Olympians. I've also come up with a bunch as well that I haven't yet added.
Pauline Davis-Thompson (athletics, Bahamas) Butch Johnson (archery, USA) Ryoko Tamura-Tani (judo, Japan) Tomomo Okazaki (speedskating, Japan) Yordan Yovchev (gymnastics, Bulgaria) Segun Toriola (table tennis, Nigeria) Prince Albert Grimaldi (bobsleigh, Monaco) Alison Sheppard (swimming, Britain) Martina Moravcová (swimming, Slovakia) Dennis Green (canoeing, Australia) Ian Ferguson (canoeing, NZ) Barbara Kendall (sailing, NZ) David Ford (canoeing, Canada) Mauricio Lima (volleyball, Brazil) Leander Paes (tennis, India)
If you count demonstration sports (we probably should, with an asterisk) Amy Peterson (short track skating, USA)
I think we should definitely start a new wikipedia article :
List of athletes with five appearances at Olympic Games
I suggest it be mostly one big sortable table, with entries slightly different from the present article for easier sorting. --Crabbylucy (talk) 08:28, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
- in fact very many athletes have 5 appearances - it will be very long list. in shooting, sailing, equestrain they are just numerous :) --85.141.69.239 (talk) 14:30, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
- Exactly. What I mean is that a list would be useless, other than creating the voice (which, surely, would be immediately deleted), you should just delete the list from the page. --Soquette (talk) 15:41, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
More 15 athletes with 6 appearances surely Is enough get them from Russian wiki is our latest here. --Soquette (talk) 06:31, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
78 athletes on the Russian language list of six(not more)-Olympics as opposed to 63 for the English language one - yep, that's a lot. I cannot read Cyrillic but perhaps someone who can could add them to the English language list? :-)
Soquette, thanks for adding Wang Yifu. I've also added Wang to the second table and updated the shooting counts from 16 to 17 in the counts table and in the fourth paragraph of the article.
Removing the five-time Olympians from this page seems a good idea. It's a pity, because very few gymnasts, swimmers, and track & field athletes get to five Olympics. But do you really think creating a brand-new page for five-time Olympians is a bad idea? Even if people from sports like Equestrianism, Shooting, Sailing, and Fencing were excluded from such a list? Or should people simply create pages like 'Gymnasts with the most Olympic Appearances' and 'Track and Field Athletes with the Most Olympic Appearances' for each sport? Crabbylucy (talk) 08:53, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
PS : What does 'creating the voice' mean? :-) Crabbylucy (talk) 08:54, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Create a new article ("voice" it's wrong because in italian is "voce" (voice) or "articolo" (article) or "pagina" (page)). Don't worry if you want to create the article List of athletes with five appearances at Olympic Games I'll be supporting you in the event of cancellation request. Do it! ;-) --Soquette (talk) 11:38, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
thanks for your support :-) I'll try to create the article in the next couple of days. I'd like to modify the table format slightly, as sorted tables are more useful. Even if there is some duplication of information. How does this look? http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Crabbylucy/Sandbox --Crabbylucy (talk) 10:09, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
- IMHO this version is perfect: it's better to switch the columns. But, myebe, it's OK for me that have monitor 22" wide, I don't think so for the others resolution. ;-) --Soquette (talk) 10:18, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Change your screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and see the table then. It just fits, once you push the wikipedia globe out. --Crabbylucy (talk) 21:38, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Added the 15 remaining athletes from the suggestions above (thanks!) and the Russian list (using online cyrillic translators and a lot of crossreferencing)
The article is now 44k long. Am removing the 5 olympian list now, and will put it up as a separate article soon. Let's see what the reaction is.--Crabbylucy (talk) 15:26, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I asked the sports-reference people if their extensive database could tell us how many people have competed in at least five Olympics. I received a spreadsheet from the reputed Olympic historian Bill Mallon (they forwarded the mail to him, I think he works for them as well as for Olympedia) that has 458 athletes who competed from 1896 to 2008, including six whose fifth appearance was 1906. You're right - placing 450 people in a single Wiki table is ... not one of my brightest ideas. I'll summarize the data and post it. Unsurprisingly, there are lots of shooters (80) and equestrians (48). But surprisingly, there are more five time Olympian track/field athletes (47) than sailors (37) or fencers (31).
Does anyone have a list of athletes whose 2010 appearance was their fifth? I have Tomomi Okazaki (speedskating), Teemu Selane (ice hockey), Pierre Lueders (bob), Mark Grimmette (luge), Casey Puckett (alpine skiing), Todd Lodwick (nordic combined), Lee Kyu-Hyeok (speedskating), Armin Zoeggler (luge), Felix Gottwald (Nordic), Tomasz Sikora (biathlon), Jere Lehtinen (ice hockey), Clara Hughes (cyc, speedskating), Sabina Valbusa (ccskiing), Patrik Jarbyn (alpine). Anyone else? --Crabbylucy (talk) 19:20, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hannu Manninen (Nordic), Mario Stecher (Nordic), Halvard Hanevold (biathlon), Ole Einar Bjørndalen (biathlon), Prince Hubertus of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (alpine skiing, 1984—1994 + 2010 (!) - he easily could get 8 appearances if he wanted :)), Jaak Mae (cc skiing), Janne Ahonen (ski jumping). It's not full list for sure. btw, does sports-reference have total list of 6+ appearances? the questions will be over :) and when they'll update 2010 Olympics? sorry, i'm not registered in en-wiki, i wrote above about Russian list as i was its author. thanks for Radanova, curuchet, n'tyamba, ptak, beashel - i didn't have them :) Michael —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.78.190.176 (talk) 01:45, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
I see now that Evgeniya Radanova is placed under "Cross country skiing" in the last list. That is of course not right... Could she be moved to (short track) speed skating? 07:00, 12 March 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fomalhaut76 (talk • contribs)
thanks for fixing it - and yes, i do have a spreadsheet from bill mallon that I got when I asked the sports-ref pple for a list. It's only updated till 2008, but I'm sure you want it. Is there a way I can upload it (in xls or csv form) to wikipedia somewhere?--Crabbylucy (talk) 20:06, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
I'm considering replacing the table of counts of six-time olympians with the table of counts of five-time Olympians. This lists the 470something athletes in full. What do you think? Here's my sandbox:--Crabbylucy (talk) 00:30, 25 March 2010 (UTC) FiveCount
- That's incredible! IMHO 470+ is a number too big ant too hard to update. --Soquette (talk) 18:29, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
It will be hard for future wikipedia editors to update, but not impossible. And seriously, this list is too important for posterity NOT to be on Wikipedia. Besides, it's a simpler table - we're showing far fewer details - hey, just the name! - for five-time Olympians than we're showing for six-time Olympians :-) Btw, the list is now up to 488, thanks to Bill Mallon providing the full list of people who competed in their fifth (or higher) Olympics at Vancouver. He says the list is complete now. I still think we might be missing one or two. Crabbylucy (talk) 23:41, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
One more issue - I cannot publish the spreadsheet Mallon gave me owing to copyright issues. He is okay with the derivative table (FiveCount) derived from it, however. I am not sure how acceptable this is to the Wikipedia community. Anyone who has trouble with it when I publish the derived table on the page should email Bill Mallon directly, methinks ...--Crabbylucy (talk) 23:44, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
I have replaced the table of counts of 6+ Olympians (that I compiled and posted some weeks ago) by the corresponding table of 5+ Olympians. This includes nearly five hundred names, but since it's only names, the total page size is still under 50k. I hope to modify the intro paragraphs in due course as they were mostly made under the assumption that we would only ever know the full list of 6+ time Olympians while we now the list of 5+ Olympians. I hope this is acceptable! It has taken hours of work. Thanks to Bill Mallon for providing the list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crabbylucy (talk • contribs) 06:25, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh, there is one difference between the tables - the new one has no fractional counts. This is somewhat unfair - consider John Foster Sr, who competed 5x sailing, 1x bobsleigh - he's considered a five-time Olympian in both sailing and bobsleigh. But the maintaining of fractional counts would be horribly unwieldy.Crabbylucy (talk) 06:30, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
The old table of counts of 6+ Olympians can be found here: SixCount so you can compare the two tables easily. Crabbylucy (talk) 16:55, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- great job, Crabbylucy! Thank you. so we can say it's complete list of 5+ participants? btw, check Radanova in Athletes with at least five Olympic appearances and Dual Sport Olympians - she competed in short-track, not speed-skating, and 5 times not 4. as well as Neumannova competed in mountainbike. Or you used speed skating and cycling intentionally? Michael —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.141.70.110 (talk) 15:55, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
btw, I began to make a list of Olympic competitors from royal families - it can be intersting. ru:List of Olympic competitors from royal families including Juan Carlos I, Harald V, Olav V, Constantine II of Greece etc. for sure it's not so large as this one :) It will be great if you can help. if you want i can translate every person into English. Michael —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.141.70.110 (talk) 16:09, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Dual sport with less than 5 Olympics
editI've excised the following, since they do not match the description of having competed in more than one sport, and appearing in 5 or more Olympics
[[Haralds Silovs]] (short track 3, speed skating 1), [[Nova Peris-Kneebone]] (field hockey 1, athletics 1), [[Fiona Robinson]] (basketball 1, handball 1),
Multiple appearances table
editHaving added updates for the appearances of
*Mark Todd (equestrian), Andrew Nicholson (equestrian) 6
*Andrew Hoy 7
I (having eventually figured out why & how to) corrected the rowspan (number of rows) for the altered numbers of 6 & 7 appearances in the List of athletes with at least six Olympic appearances. The Multiple appearances table was corrected for these on the left side but not the "Minimum number" right side which seems to need more work. I've stretched my brain sufficiently for now-any new blood?

Request for updates
editPlease, update some information in all tables:
- Janne Ahonen - 7th Olympic Games;
- Sergei Dolidovich - 7th Olympic Games;
- Noriaki Kasai - 8th Olympic Games (didn't updated here);
- Alla Tsuper - 6th Olympic Games.

Qualification vs participation
editDo not add any athlete to this page unless they have actually competed at the Games. Just qualifying for an team is not sufficient - this list is only for athletes that participated at the event. This is particularly relevant with the delay of Tokyo 2020 - no athlete should be added as a 2020 participant until the Games actually take place. Irregulargalaxies (talk) 17:38, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
6 appearances

2024 updates
editNino Salukvadze apparently reached 10 appearances, making her tied for most appearances along with Ian Millar. It looks like Salukvadze's page has been updated, but this page and Millar's need to be updated as well. Also there are almost definitely others that should be added, I just saw this as an obvious one and thought I'd make the topic for it. --MatthewJenkins02 (talk) 20:48, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
