Proposed merge of Kirklees, Calderdale into Kirklees Priory
editSummarizing and paraphrasing the understanding at WP:Redirects for discussion/Log/2023 February 25#Kirklees, Kirklees, we don't need an article about the "place" as it doesn't appear to have ever been a village, it's not in the Domesday Book, consider Sandwell/Sandwell Priory for example, the district is named after the priory but there is a settlement called Sandwell
[1] but we don't even have an article about the settlement.
A Vision of Britain does say it was a village but clicking on the map and going to the location of Kirklees Hall doesn't show any settlement on either 19th or 20th century maps
. There is no other evidence there ever was a village by this name.
Kirklees Hall and Kirklees Priory are sufficient to deal with it
.
Merge if there is any content not available at the Priory article, or simply redirect. Jay 💬 15:38, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- Agree but User:Jay is it perhaps worth sending it to AFD? While I think it should probably be merged rather than deleted completely it may be worth sending it to AFD just to see if people think it should be deleted completely and AFD is more likely to get more participation/a quicker outcome. If Kirklees, Kirklees is kept at RFD prior to a merge of the Calderdale article it may be worth renominating. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:22, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- If your desire is to merge, then why take it to AfD and risk deletion? Or is it that you prefer a merge-and-delete, but not a merge-and-redirect? If there is nothing to merge, and Kirklees, Calderdale is not a plausible article or redirect title, then we can nominate it for deletion. Jay 💬 17:33, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- Because the title may create more confusion than its worth. The Huddersfield Examiner says Kirklees is in the Domesday Book but I can't find any evidence of that. There was a DMV north west of the priory but it doesn't specify its name hence there doesn't appear to be enough evidence there was a village called "Kirklees". Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:48, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- I don't mind AfD. If it's only the title that is the problem, and there is nothing to merge, perhaps rename to Kirklees Priory site or something and redirect to the priory, and then delete via RfD. Jay 💬 18:05, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

- I compared the two articles and here are the merge candidates where info available at the Calderdale article is not there in Priory. Calderdale mentions 12th century, Priory doesn't, although it is categorized under the Category:Christian monasteries established in the 12th century. Calderdale mentions the M62 motorway, and that the priory site is on private land now. The mention of Robin Hood being the nephew of the prioress can be ignored, because Robin Hood's Death says she was his cousin. The 3 examiner sources may also be moved to Priory. Priory in the times of Robin Hood
editThe information added to the picture says "Not the building from which Robin Hood is supposed to have shot the arrow to mark where he wished to be buried, although possibly on the same site. The part seen here is a late 16C or early 17C addition to the early 16C building (see other photo for this)." Although I do not dispute this information I want to add some context given in a German documentary series. German public TV produces a programme named "Mythos - Die größten Rätsel der Geschichte" (translated: Myth - History's Greatest Mysteries). In the 2022 Robin Hood episode, scientists and historians such as Mike Clark or Sean McGlynn dig deeper into the legends surrounding RH. The priory and also the grave are looked into. Louis Pickersgill, the owner of the land where Robin Hood's grave is located, claims that the remaining building of the priory is the exact one from the tales. The arrow is believed to have been shot from the first floor. Glamourqueen (talk) 00:28, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
