Lead adjectives
editAccording to the lead, Barron is "considered one of the most important and influential jazz pianists since bebop"; the source is given as Allmusic, but nothing like that statement appears there. I will remove this sentence unless a source is found to justify retaining it - there are lots of pianists who are more influential post-bebop. EddieHugh (talk) 22:38, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- The phrase is not inconsistent with the the existing Allmusic cite, but it does require some synthesis to get there, so I agree it's not sufficient. Their printed bio in All Music Guide: The Definitive Guide to Popular Music, by a different writer, is more explicit: "One of the giants of modern mainstream piano." As was Gene Rizzo, who devotes a chapter to Barron in his book 50 Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time. I've added these cites to the article. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 13:12, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- Looks like we were typing at the same time...
- The All Music book: p. 1152 should be p. 72 for the bio. That does have "Kenny Barron has been recognized as one of the giants of modern mainstream piano". The "mainstream" bit is important, as it is very different from the "since bebop" that is in the lead. The Gene Rizzo book has Barron at #36.
- Overall: I think that the Allmusic ref should be moved to immediately after "Barron has appeared on hundreds of recordings as both leader and sideman" and then the p72 quote above can replace "is consequently considered one of the most important and influential jazz pianists since bebop".
- The Rizzo book might fit in somewhere else, instead of the lead.
- These changes would make the opening just as positive, but more accurate. EddieHugh (talk) 13:28, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- Page 1152 is clearly the page on the bio. I have an earlier edition in hard copy, and it's on page 912. What can I tell you, they stick the jazz guys at the back--complaints should be sent to Allmusic, not me :).
- Not sure why you draw a distinction based on "mainstream", given that his bio is already in the jazz section, and that it labels him as "Hard bop / Post-Bop". His reputation has clearly been made in the 40-50 years since bebop peaked, through his extensive discography, gigging, and his teaching at Rutgers and Juilliard.
- MOS preference is for inline citations to be placed at the end of a sentence or paragraph, except for highly contentious articles, and I also think that the Rizzo book's cite is appropriate here. In the interest of readability, I would prefer not to kerplunk cites within the sentence. If, however, you think that there is a better ordering of the cites at the end of the last lead sentence, I would be approve of any order that your prefer.
- I think that the verbiage in the lead should be kept as it is, as it is more specific. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 20:20, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- Interesting. Keep the page numbers - I referred to an online version. My take is that bebop is a style rather than a period, so important & influential people "since bebop" might be Tristano, Cecil Taylor, etc., not those in the mainstream. The first sentence at bebop, which people might check, also has it as a "style". That's why I'd include "mainstream"; maybe "is considered one of the most important and influential mainstream jazz pianists since the bebop era". That reflects his teaching, etc. If not cluttering is preferable, then keep the citations at the end; order doesn't matter. EddieHugh (talk) 17:32, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Kenny Barron discography
editSupport split - Discography section takes up more than one third of the page, and should be split to a new article entitled Kenny Barron discography. --Jax 0677 (talk) 18:04, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
