Talk:Karen people in the Andaman Islands

Title

The title of this article looks weird to me: the place is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and without inserting a word such as "people" it sounds almost like the name of some ruler. Can we not move it? - Sitush (talk) 19:12, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

@Sitush: I totally agree. It should be Karen in the Andamans. I have previously heard of Bengalis in the Andamans[1] and Bangladeshis in the Andamans [2].--DreamLinker (talk) 12:32, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Karen of the Andamans → Karen people in the Andamans – The current title is a bit weird. We usually refer to x people in y place, instead of x people of y place. Since the most common term used for the ethnic group is Karen people, I am suggesting this name. Another alternative is "Karen in the Andamans". • Oppose The issue arises because of WP:The which prefers that we don't use an initial definite article. • Support, ideally to Karen people in the Andaman Islands. The convention which Andrew Davidson references is clearly against the usual practice on Wikipedia. Thus we distinguish The Nuer from Nuer people, for example, without a disambig page and the practice is also reflected in the relevant head article on Karen people. An unpublished thesis and dubious conference presentation ("The Karen is [sic] Burmese immigrant [sic] brought to Andaman [sic] in 1925") are not particularly useful in establishing a WP:COMMONNAME and this is really not the best article to use to challenge a consensus. • Support Karen people in the Andaman Islands. In this case, I don't think there is a common name so it's up to us to pick a reasonable descriptive name. Karen people in the Andaman Islands is consistent with the titles of Karen people and Andaman Islands, and "in the" is consistent with the many titles like Japanese people in South Korea, Zimbabweans in South Africa, and Jews in New York City.—Neil Shah-Quinn (talk) 09:14, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
