First Dáil only, or 1st 2nd and 3rd?

edit

This article appears to contradict the Oireachtas members database, which does not list a John J. O'Kelly for any Dáil, but does list a Seán (Sceig) Ó Ceallaigh.

Seán (Sceig) Ó Ceallaigh is listed as Education Secretary in 1921, which is further confirmation that this is the same person. However, Seán (Sceig) Ó Ceallaigh is also lsited as having sat in the fisrt three Dála, not just the first which this article claims. I believe that this article is wrong -- can anyone confirm? --BrownHairedGirl 08:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's the same person. The differences are caused by the subject's frequent use of both the Irish and English versions of his name. J.J. O'Kelly, John J. O'Kelly, John O'Kelly, Seán Ó Ceallaigh and his penname Sceilg (not Sceig) and more can all be found in historical accounts and secondary literature.
The article is wrong on elections - he was elected to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dáileanna. However, he is problematic as he was one of the people who refused to accept that the 2nd Dáil was ever dissolved. Along with like-minded republicans, they continued to meet as the Second Dáil during the 1920s and 30s, and eventually signed over their "authority" to the IRA in 1938. See the section in the article on the Second Dáil for more details.
One way or the other, we should look into how his Wikipedia entry should be named.--Damac 08:54, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think he was most commonly refered to as John Joseph O'Kelly, I think he used his Gaelic name more for his writings, were he was also known as Scéilig. Seán Ó Ceallaigh is Sean T. O'Kelly elected for Dublin College Green in 1918, sat in the Dáil ontil the 12th Dáil, became president in 1945, another Seán Ó Ceallaigh was a Fianna Fáil TD for Clare elected to the 17th and 18th Dáil.--padraig3uk 00:41, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Free State parliament"

edit

"He was elected to the Third Dáil but abstained from the Free State parliament." The Third Dåil was elected in mid-1922 but the Free State wasn't established until December; so I've changed this a little.86.42.219.131 (talk) 04:20, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The image placed here misidentified Séan T. Ó Ceallaigh with Séan S. Ó Ceallaigh, so I have removed it. If anyone has an alternative picture they could upload it would be appreciated. RashersTierney (talk) 19:33, 9 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The authority of the authority

edit

Can anybody explain the wording who transferred the "authority" of what they believed was the "authority" of the Government of the Irish Republic? Somebody (not me) tried to simplify it but was reverted by Spleodrach. What can "The authority of the authority" possibly mean? 2001:BB6:4713:4858:5078:3FC7:E02C:F0F7 (talk) 12:15, 25 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Read Irish republican legitimism. These people believed they were the legitimate government of the Irish Republic and so, they transferred their authority as that government, to the IRA Army Council. I have re-worded the sentence. Spleodrach (talk) 14:39, 27 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thankfully, I don't have to read that article, because the sentence is now in English. 2001:BB6:4713:4858:D8:E329:11F6:319B (talk) 17:55, 27 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
