The small rear quarter-light windows of this and the Mark 2 became a trademark of Jaguars of the 1950s and 1960s

Jaguar 2.4 or 3.4 restrospectively called Jaguar Mk I

WHEREAS the Mk II does indeed have that Jaguar-characteristic (as we now see it) rear quarter light, quite unlike other 1950s sports saloons

I think the small rear quarter-lights in question were first seen on the Mk II. Seen from the side, it is indeed the absence of those memorable rear quarter lights that is the main difference between the Mk I treated here and the Mk II. The rear quarter lights of the Mk I are merely the necessary quarterlights to permit the main window to wind down all the way - much as you might find on a Rover or Humber or Sunbeam Talbot from the 50s. The overall PROFILE of the MK I is "very Jaguar": but the rear quarter lights?

We don't have a wiki image of the Mk I from the side, but I think the rear three quarters shot - of the same Starnberg registered car whose front end currently adorns the entry - also makes the point. Or do others see matters differently? I guess it might be construed a matter of opinion....

I've also put here a little picture of the MK II from a similar angle which maybe helps the comparison...

Both MK 1 and 2 both had rear quarter lights but they were much larger and more obvious on the Mk 2 and went further back, actually behind the door lower rear shut line. The Mk 2 front windscreen pillars also got slimmer and the rear window bigger making the car have much more glass and incidentally making the whole car look bigger. The Mk 1 door window frames were part of the door pressing while on the Mk 2 the frames were chrome plated and bolted to the door as separate items. The 1957 MkVIII was, I think, the first Jaguar saloon to have this feature. Malcolma (talk) 08:14, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

history
