J. Bennett Johnston → Bennett Johnston – It appears that WP:SELFIDENTITY makes "Bennett Johnston" the best title for this article.
- If you go to the C-SPAN video database for Johnston, scroll down, and expand the "Appearance Stats" section, notice how some screenshots from 1988 to 1991 show "Sen. Bennett Johnston" in the lower third.
- Also, campaign ads from Johnston's 1990 campaign for Senate (with white supremacist David Duke as his opponent!) used simply "Bennett Johnston". See this YouTube video at 0:10 and this one at 0:05.
News media coverage from his Senate career also omitted his first initial, like 1988 Washington Post article, as well as these stories from the same publication in 1981 and 1982. Same goes for news coverage after he left the Senate, like this 2014 Times-Picayune article. Arbor to SJ (talk) 19:43, 16 December 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. - Oppose MOS:SELFIDENTITY generally says should use what sources use, unless it is unclear which I don't think it is. J. Bennett Johnston appears to be the COMMONNAME. Seeing this
atlanticwapo quoted in the atlantic piece and other coverage when searching in google news; generally seeing the use of that form over bennett johnston. Looking at the sources in the article reveals the same. Galobtter (pingó mió) 07:28, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
