Participation
editIs there a particular reason Italy does not participate in the contest?
Refusal to participate
edit"Italians are passionate about their many singer-songwriters, cantautori. It's for just this reason that Italy no longer participates every year in the Europe-wide song festival called the Eurovision Song Festival."
"A few years back, when Italy came in a terrible position with a song and performance by one of their most treasured singer-songwriters, Enrico Ruggeri, they took their ball and well home, refusing to play with Eurovision any more. They accused their fellow broadcasters of catering to the masses' lack of musical sophistication and of politicized voting."
Taken from "Candida Martinelli's Italophile Site", http://italophiles.com/eurovision.htm. The claim is corroborated in several other sources. Note that inclusion of the above quotation may be an infringement of copyright.

To be fair to them, Eurovision is completely politicised, every country votes for their neighbours or politcal allies, Moldova gave their high points this year to Ukraine, Russia and the twelve Romania, despite the fact that anyone with ears could tell you how sh*te the Ukrainian and Russian entries were, especially Russia (Romania was pretty good as far as Eurovision goes). It's just not a serious contest worth entering anymore. Seek100 23:03, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Real reasons from ITALY
editHi. I'm italian. Rai (the national Broadcaster) has official say that the reason are only 1: low audience in Italy of the Eurovision Song Contest. And add also that RAI invest in other most important musical contest (like SANREMO).
Your news is false!!! If you do a search about this, you can find about in more italian website (or in Rai's official website also). Correct it.
Italy's 2011 return to Eurovision : Poor or good?
edit"but the ratings were very poor (only 1.2 million people watched with a share of 6.43% on the night)."
This is true and thanks for the sources but is it necessary to mention this? It makes Italy's return to Eurovision look..bad when it really wasn't. I'm not trying to make Italy look good or anything since its we have to keep things neutral but shouldn't this information just be mentioned on Eurovision 2011's article? I don't see how poor ratings has anything to do with Italy's return. Bleubeatle (talk) 00:05, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think you might be missing the main point here though, Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which means we cover as much info as possible. When the policies refer to Neutral point of view, they mean that all our editing must be done fair representation, proportionately, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources. Seeing as those details are of a significant view and backed-up by a reliable source, then its inclusion is warranted. Wesley☀Mouse 01:15, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Maybe expanding the sentence slightly would be more appropriate to remove the negative sound to it currently. Something like "but the ratings were very poor (only 1.2 million people watched with a share of 6.43% on the night), compared to previous years." Wesley☀Mouse 01:21, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

English in 1990 entry?
editSurely, the 1990 entry contains a repeated phrase in English? Toto repeats "unite, unite Europe" which isn't Italian (unisci, unisci l'Europa in Italian according to a translator). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8308:381:EE00:4BF:FC30:7452:9587 (talk) 19:06, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
