Maybe I'm just naive (or maybe the Brazilian government was,) but I cannot believe that the Brazilians really believed they could force Irish and German immigrants to do whatever they wanted; there must be more to the story. We're talking about the most sought after merceneries in the world at the time and the Brazilians would really conduct themselves so poorly? You cannot tell me that they didn't foresee the said consequnces. If it is true, it's pretty funny.
