I finally found the time to create this article. In its present form it is mostly a translation of the respective article in the German Wikipedia. The sources of information are mainly the official website of the IYPT www.iypt.org and also the official website of the Austrian Young Physicists' Tournament www.aypt.at. In case someone notices that the text in this article is mostly identical to the text on www.aypt.at this is due to the fact that I am the webmaster of www.aypt.at and therefore I am also the author of the text. Furthermore a lot of the information in this article is from my 8 years personal experience with the IYPT.

I sincerely hope that some other (ex-) participants of the IYPT will join and help to improve this article.

Furthermore I would like to apologize for any language error which I might have made. English is not my native language so I encourage all of you to improve this article also from the language point of view.

Tone template

Someone (with just an IP address; no user account) added the "tone"-template to this article, complaining that it had an inappropriate tone. I can see no reason for that, and since no reason has been given by the one who added the template I removed it. If it had been added by someone with a user account I would have asked him/her via the talk page, but this was not possible in this case.

I am certainly willing to discuss improvements to the article. But please, if you do have criticism then explain it on the talk page.

Belorussian version with a badge photo added

Yesterday I made the Belorussian (=Belarusian) version of this page. An administrator at Belorussian Wikipedia immediately responded and added a photo of a badge of the 2nd IYPT participant! :)) He took part in 2nd IYPT in 1989! :))

Also, some time ago I made an article on the Russian Tournament that has some information on the first years of the competition in Russia.

I'm planning to release the Russian version of the IYPT article. However, I will have to avoid making direct translation of existing Georg Hofferek's article because of existing controversies (concerning the review stage, English-language tournaments etc.)

I am also certainly willing to expand YPT-related articles in Wikipedia (in different languages). And I would like to underline that the current English-language version of IYPT article is already very objective and informative.

History of Young Physicists' Tournament in Russia

I have found time to collect all available information on the YPTs in 1980s and on the first IYPTs (held in Soviet Union and in Russia). The article History of Young Physicists' Tournament in Russia is now available.

I am definitely willing to improve that article and hope that the information will be interesting for the IYPT community.

I am also hoping that some parts of that article may help expanding the article on IYPT.

Detailed timeline table proposal

Dear colleagues,

I have a proposal to replace current Venues and Winners sections with the following table (it is not yet completed but is quite well verified. Some pieces of information are somewhat rare).

What is very important, this table has direct links to problems of a certain year, and (hopefully) will have links to reports, press-releases and further information.

With such a repository table, it will be easier to search for IYPT-related information on the Web.

Hi, Georg! Thanks you very much for your vote. I hope that no one would have serious objections, so I put the table on the article and everyone could gradually imporove it.

Do you find it necessary to support numbers, positions etc. with external references? I think it would be good, because currently the IYPT artcile does not have any references at all. Proposal to add a detailed table of participating teams

Dear colleagues!

I have a proposal to add to the IYPT article the following table that shows what teams have taken part in IYPTs in different years. The idea of such a table was proposed by Dr. Andrzej Nadolny, see his presentation. I have fully cross-checked the data, verified the number of teams and expanded the contents to 1988-1992 and 2003-2007, thus updating Dr. Nadolny's table. Hopefully, the ?s will sometimes be replaced with a confident information; however, it's better than nothing for today.

H means host country.

A recent edit made by 87.252.227.33 seems to be correct, as it has been rumored that Belarus has always been represented with a single team. However, I do not have any written evidence for 1993. The exact list of participants in 1993 is very obscure to me, as the only written source claims that there were 19 teams from 11 countries. It must be a mistake, but a Ukrainian participant of 1993, who provided me with much information, was not certain on how many teams were present and assumed that 19/11 might be possible. Further interviews will be extremely valuable. I contacted 87.252.227.33 and will post here if any new information is available. Regards. --Ilya Martchenko 20:55, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

A featured article

I am very pleased that after recent nomination and unexpectedly positive votes, the article be-x-old:IYPT was chosen a featured article in the Belarusian Wikipedia. It will be displayed on the Main Page throughout February 2008.

It gives me a reason to think that if we add external references to support data in the Timeline table, in the table of Participants and in the text itself, it may seriously improve the quality of this article in English wikipedia and in other national Wikipedias as well.

The voting lasted for 1 month and ended up with 100% votes pro. It was noted that the verifiability of information is among key values of Wikipedia contents.
