Post-detention and struggles with social media

edit

Derakhshan posted an article in July 2015, sharing his concerns over the future of the Web and his struggles to adapt with new social networking media.

"Sham" Claim

edit

The beginning summary of this article says (since not long): "It is assumed that the whole arrest story of him in November 2008 is a sham and that he has been collaborating with pro-Ahmadinejad groups on the rigging plot of presidential election of June 2009 eversince."

The reference is a blog article belonging to an individual and is solely his personal view of the story. I have no connection to neither persons but I assume that this sham claim is more of a conspiracy theory and it should be proved by a lawful resource rather than somebody's personal opinion!

I therefore removed the sentence! Note that "Unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material — whether negative, positive, or just questionable — about living persons should be removed immediately and without discussion from Wikipedia articles". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.102.65.174 (talk) 16:03, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wrong information

edit

Most of the information about him are not right anymore. for example his weblog is not among most visited persian weblogs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mehrannne (talkcontribs) 16:30, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

True, but do you have a source? Shervink 16:44, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
yes, I added some source for your sake Mehrannne
What do you mean for my sake? Articles are supposed to have sources on wikipedia. As I said I'm not a fan of this guy either but please stick to the rules. I also suggest changing the picture back to a more appropriate one. Also, what's the source that his weblog is banned by most Iranians?Shervink 17:11, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I did not see any source that shows his weblog is among most readed weblogs in Iran. Did you? so I added the source just for your sake. moreover decreasing his visitors is just because most of his visitors do not read his webloge anymore. isn't it clear?
what do you mean by more appropriate photo? is there any definition of appropriate photo in wikipedia? please let me know.
You state that the readership of his weblog has decreased because of his attacks on Iranian human right activists. I perfectly get your point, but do you have any sources specifically making this connection? If you don't, you should not just add your own analysis to the article, as it would be original research. This is regardless of the fact that I agree with the statement in general. Shervink 17:21, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
And please don't keep putting that bathroom picture there, it's inappropriate for a serious article. Shervink 17:23, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
About the photo, I think it is just your personal opinion so I respect it but I will not change the photo unless you prove that bathroom photo is inappropriate for a serious article(Although I prefer to call it an advertising autobiography)
what is wrong with the new one?

I do not want to waist your time and mine for this asshole. so lets finish it for now. . —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mehrannne (talkcontribs) 17:27, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for not wanting to waste my time. Per WP:BLP, I will thus revert to the version prior to your edits, as "Unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material — whether negative, positive, or just questionable — about living persons should be removed immediately and without discussion from Wikipedia articles". Shervink 17:37, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

btw, I did not make any connection between his recent writings and decreasing his visitors, I just mentioned one after the other as the time sequence. So you see it was true and I will change to my version. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mehrannne (talkcontribs) 17:42, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
You say that "After his recent writings against Iranian human rights activists, his weblog is banned by most of iranian and he has lost most of his visitors", and this is an unsourced statement. Where is the source supporting the claim? And about the picture, putting it there is extremely tasteless to say the least, so I replaced it again. Shervink 08:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I did not conclude anything. I just mentioned the things in their time order. "After" is just used as to mention time order. If you agree about "his writings against human rights activists in past year" and if you agree about " decreasing his visitors recently", you see there is no conclusion, it is just time order. Isn't it? Mehrannne 09:57, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, it is not. The wording is clearly meant as a conclusion. Moreover, you need to find sources explicitly saying that he writes against Iranian human rights activists (I know he does sometimes, it's just that there is no sources such as a newspaper or report or whatever saying such a thing). You also have no source for the statement that most Iranians have boycotted his weblog. BTW, a weblog is not considered a proper source on wikipedia. Shervink 10:13, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

you do your job, I do mine ;)Mehrannne 10:22, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's not how WP works, and you're not going to get any results with such a motto. If you can't reasonably defend and back your claims, don't put them in the article.Shervink 10:32, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Mehrannne, you are deliberately neglecting Wikipedia:Verifiability. Please get familiar with the process of wikipedia before starting to edit. Shervink 10:43, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I do not understand you. His weblog is used already as a scource in this page, why do not you delete those parts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mehrannne (talkcontribs) 10:56, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism

edit

There are new attempts to vandalise this page by some users including Beatiful Ziba. --Hoder 17:18, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I compared the former version with this one, and it seems the detials that Hoder is crtical of ... are based on facts, and apart from personal beliefs of the other contributors .... Yet since they are negative, Hoder just doesn't like it in his profile ... Afterall being described (attention: the former article didn't say he IS) as an opportunist is not good...—Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.136.139.253 (talkcontribs)

please please please can we get rid of this page. He is a blogger - he is not a journalist (he's never had his own column, has written VERY sporadically) and worst of all most of this is written by himself including the above! This website should be about knowledge not personalities. DELETE!

This article satisfies the requirements for notability in biographies. ---J.S (T/C/WRE) 13:30, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

This guy is a promoter of Ahmadinejad and the Islamic Republic who knows how to talk the language of 'useful idiots' in the West. He has fooled the gullible people in the West so much that by reading his entry in Wikepdia, people think he is an Iranian dissident! He has even threatened people inside Iran when they have worked with making documentaries. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.243.222.4 (talk) 09:37, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Random personal details

edit

Removed from the article; not especially relevant to a short bio

Derakhshan supported Mostafa Moeen and Ali Larijani during the Iranian presidential election of 2005. The election was boycotted by many Iranian opposition leaders who believed all the candidates had been co-opted - or would be co-opted if elected - by the regime in the oppression of its political opposition.
Derakhshan visited Israel in January 2006. He claimed that he went to Israel as a symbol of dialogue between Iranian and Israeli people; his visit was widely covered by the Israeli media.

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Sj (talkcontribs)

The latter sentence concerning his visit to Israel is especially relevant. Do not remove again or you will be reported for vandalism. DragonRouge 20:58, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The author has lied about Hoders treatment at the Iranian airport, in his interview on CBS he paint a very different picture on what actually happened. Here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOzPrbXWqDw

Long quotes

edit

There are a few unnecessarily long quotes on the page that need to be summarized instead of quoted. There are also a lot of unsourced claims about appearance in media, and generally the page appears to be pro-Derakhshan instead of being neutral. roozbeh 18:10, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

2008 arrest

edit

Hoder's now been arrested in Iran. He's a Canadian... anyone who has initiated anything on his behalf please let us know. I've contacted my MP. You? --Jasonnolan (talk) 02:44, 20 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Something useful, NPOV and notable would be to have a solid section about his arrest and support campaigns in this present article. i've started off a section by copying what's in the summary paragraph, but i'm sure there must be a huge amount of material. A problem could be people claiming that we cannot ever use blogs as references. The counterargument would be that in the case of a famous blogger who is arrested, a lot of the best references will naturally be among the blogging community. Video no longer available

edit

"However, his account of events were contradicted in an October 2006 interview.[1] In this interview Hossein said his experience with the secret police "was quite friendly and professionally"."

I wanted to check on the validity of this claim that he contradicted himself and went to look for the referenced video. I am unable to find it on the site. Needless to say, a claim that he contradicted himself about one of the important events of his life to that point (being detained by Iran) is important enough that we need to make sure we get it right. Does the source exist anywhere, and does it back up this claim?--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:27, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why?

edit

why he is in "Iranian former Muslims" category? Is there any evidence shoing he have changed his religion?Pooya (talk) 10:06, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

trivia - exact date of release with source? date of pardon?

edit

Someone put in www.roozonline.com as a source to claim that Hoder's release date was 19 November. That's rather vague sourcing. I didn't remove the claim (since it's credible), but I'll let someone else find the specific article on Rooz or another WP:RS - in Persian would be fine if it's a specific article.

The wording I put is also a little awkward, because the Thomson Reuters article doesn't say if the pardon and release were on the same date, or whether the pardon was in January or March 2014, which is hinted at by that article, without a direct claim. But better awkward correct (sourced) statements than elegant wrong ones.

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Hossein Derakhshan/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

This is a personal vanity page created by Hossein Derakhsan for the purpose of self-promotion. It is full of half-truths and exaggerations regarding many incidents, particularly his alleged interrogation by Iraniann security officials in October 2005. There is no independent source or documentation to prove that he was ever interrogated. His trip to Israel was not groundbreaking, either. Iranian writers and academics visit Israel frequently - Hossein merely received a great deal of publicity because he actively sought the attention of the local press.
