Small amount of information about Sega Saturn

edit

Why is there a small amount of information on the Sega Saturn? The article claims to have a main site in Denmark but it isn't listed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.211.213.58 (talk) 20:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

3DS section has no refs

The section about the 3DS has no citations at the time of this writing, and makes little mention of current efforts(and legitimate successes) in cracking the console. There have also been no downloadable homebrew titles made available to the public at this time, and I doubt the existence of card-based homebrew, with the non-existence of a flash card able to run 3DS ROMs. Also confusing in differentiating 3DS homebrew VS. NDS homebrew that is compatible with the system. Suggesting complete rewrite and sourcing where applicable. A compilation of some movement can be found here: http://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendo-3ds-hack-compilation.340296/ , but I'm unsure of whether this can be used as a proper source. 206.174.82.18 (talk)

Third generation?

edit

Why was the section covering the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 titled "Third-generation"? Those consoles are supposed to be seventh generation consoles. I've changed it to reflect that.--Fragman52 (talk) 11:43, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dreamcast

edit

Why no information about Dreamcast? It's been one of the most popular legal homebrew platforms in recent history. preceding unsigned comment by 12.208.7.22 (talk • contribs)

"Today, the most frequently used platforms for homebrew development are Atari 2600, NES, Game Boy Advance, and Dreamcast."
First line, second paragraph. preceding unsigned comment by Dub-c (talk • contribs)
Well obviously if the user in question added it by themselves =) Anyway, if you read the article, you see that it doesn't really talk much about Dreamcast homebrews itself; The reason was that I (who wrote most of the stuff in the article) am not very well aware of most of intricacies of DC homebrew scene. I admit it's a big omission though; someone who knows a bit more about Dreamcast stuff should add a little bit to the article. Might be worth it. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 23:48, 27 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Clarification on GameCube

edit

I felt like my brief description of the change I made in the GameCube section might be misinterpreted, so here's a bit of a clarification...

The game, Phantasy Star Online, for the GameCube, was always released as a "compilation" of Episodes 1 & 2. There wasn't ever a GameCube title that was simply "Phantasy Star Online," as there have been for the Dreamcast and the PC. The first GameCube PSO title was the compilation of Episodes 1 and 2. The fix was the same compilation of episodes, just that the word "Plus" was tacked on to the title.

o.o I hope I don't sound to horribly redundant when I say that, but I'm trying to make this perfectly clear.

Nintendo 64

edit

Was there ever anything on the N64, http://www.pdroms.de/ had 37 N64 Games, and to my understanding PDRoms is mostly if not totally homebrew, so atleast some hb had been done. Anyone have info?

~DtD (NOTE: PDRoms is down, so look at this archive) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by DtD (talkcontribs) 17:14, 31 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

There were a bunch of emulators for things like GB Mono and NES, as well as games etc. for the 64. [1] --Thaddius 23:16, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Coverage of Earlier Generations

edit

I believe this article should be cleaned up with respect to homebrewing by generation. As it reads, there's a messy introduction that glosses over various platforms across several generations before picking up into a generation-by-generation breakdown.

Given the remarks at the head of article about the popularity of homebrewing for older systems, it seems a bit odd that the more popular homebrewing targets (e.g., Atari systems, ColecoVision, etc.) aren't remarked upon in any structured way.

Where is Homebrew Beer?

edit

Why does the first line say something like, "the term homebrew is used only to refer to home-made video games." This is blatantly untrue. Homebrew beer has been around for a long time before videogames. I understand that it can't be included on this page, but I was very surprised to see that there was no disambiguation page for 'homebrew'. By the way, for the record, I'm not some beer loving nut who wants to know where his beer page is, I was simply trying to find information about the home brewing of beer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.178.226.12 (talk) 05:55, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree, and have made an edit which attempts to clarify the etymology. Clayhalliwell (talk) 19:39, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Homebrewing of beer has its own article. This one (as evidenced by its title) is for the homebrew of video games only, hence the intro sentence (though I've removed the "only"). Fin© 20:20, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I can see you're going to be a problem. Clayhalliwell (talk) 21:18, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please read WP:No Personal Attacks Clay. Fin© 23:52, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It wasn't an attack, it was a statement of fact. Citation: Your last edit (and your itchy trigger finger in pointing to WP:NPA). You stated in your last edit comment that "homebrewing is not a word used in the homebrew scene". This is demonstrably false. A simple Google search of "+homebrewing games" yields ~370,000 hits. Certainly not all those hits refer to video games, but more than enough do to establish the term's use in the homebrew gaming scene. Clayhalliwell (talk) 04:18, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you add quotation marks to that search "hombrew games" gets 274,000 hits. "hombrewing games" gets just 120 (down to 36 with duplicates), so I think my point is valid. Fin© 11:17, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article name

edit

I suggest changing the articles name to "Homemade video games" 272,000,000 hits on MSN, 29,400,000 on Yahoo, 14,300,000" on Google <March 30, 2009 6:27am>, compare these numbers to "Homebrew video games" searches listed above. Like model plane construction, these games are mostly designed and built for a hobby or recreation by amateurs, while it seems only a few actually seem to get completed. It is more in the same category of Hacker (hobbyist) and other such hobbies, and could also be titled "Hobbyist (video games)", or "Amateur Video Games", but "Homemade Video Games" seems to be the most common name for these games and doesn't involve placing () in the title or the possible misleading term "Homebrew" which to some people could be interpreted as brewery type games such as Tapper, much in the same way as the term Adult video game, which doesn't always include only games with nudity. While the term "Homemade video games" would be more in general use to the public, which could be unfamiliar with terms like "Pirated", "Bootleg", "Homebrew", and "Hacked", which are more of the "gaming scene" type expressions. (Floppydog66 (talk))

Nah, regardless of what'd be of more user to the public, "Homebrew" is the correct title, not "Homemade". Homebrew is not necessarily a game, it could be an emulator or a hack. "Homemade video games" would imply this. Thanks! Fin© 12:06, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think the title is indeed misleading, but also for a different reason. The article focuses only on homemade/homebrew games for consoles, and hence the title should reflect it. I've arrived to this article several times hoping to learn about the homebrew scene for 8bit computers like MSX/Commodore 64/ZX Spectrum, and I am always confused about why it is only for consoles given the title. 28 May 2021

GBA Homebrew

This makes no mention of the legality of homebrew. It's treated completely neutrally when it's one of the biggest subjects about homebrew. It's very illegal. Emulators are not illegal and everything else is. Tiddly tiddly tiddly BRIMATION —Preceding unsigned comment added by BRiMaTiOn (talkcontribs) 10:56, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh, here's the old GBA homebrew section. It was removed with reason "Purely unsourced generalities. Add back w/ sources".

I think the GBA section should be left blank instead of having a link leading to an irrelevant article, until someone can be bothered to add well sourced info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheAccountCreationFormIsDumb (talkcontribs) 22:04, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Eighth Generation Consoles Cleanup

edit

Hey, just want to start off by saying that I'm new to editing on here, so I'm not entirely sure about the guidelines of how articles should be written.

Anyway, I took a look through this article and noticed that the section on Eighth generation consoles (Essentially Nintendo consoles) is FAR too dense. I know that there have been many advancements recently as to the Homebrew area for said consoles, but it feels unnecessary for an encyclopedia, it feels more like it's explaining the entire history of homebrew hacking in immense detail rather than giving a summary. And although I dabble, I'm not very knowledgeable on Wii U/3DS homebrew, so I'm not sure about how to make the necessary edits. Could (and should) this section be condensed or cleaned up in any way? Homebrew (video games)Homebrew video game – Per WP:NATURAL. The current disambiguation isn't even consistent, as most articles use (video gaming) instead. However, I think removing the parenthesis would suffice and make it similar to Indie game. Homebrew or homebrew

edit

I noticed that every time "Homebrew" was the first word in a sentence it was capitalized, which is correct. But when it was in the middle of the sentence, it was capitalized most of the time but sometimes left lowercase. I'm not a grammar expert i'm just confused — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rben2004 (talkcontribs) 04:46, 26 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's just an adjective, so I agree: it shouldn't be capitalized in the middle of a sentence. Dgpop (talk) 20:30, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nintendo Switch

Nowadays the way we run homebrew on a switch is with the use of hekate and software like that. But are there any sources out there which discuss hekate other than the guides?OdorlessBasil98 (talk) 02:08, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Right now, searching for "The Homebrew Channel" will give a redirect to the "Wii" header on this page. Could we make another page about the homebrew channel?

Unfocused article

edit

The lead sets up the article for being bout hobbyist-written video games for closed consumer systems. The actual article, though, is a spotty history of jailbreaking each video game console across eight generations. I'm tempted to delete 90% of the article. Another option is to rename it to "Jailbreaking video game consoles" or somesuch, which is what it's currently about, but that sounds guidebook-like. Dgpop (talk) 15:07, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
