Statistics
editIn the "brain drain" discussion, it would be informative to give statistics on the percentages of the population in Iran that have various levels of education, and compare those to international statistics. -- Beland 09:02, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- Good suggestion, but hard to find.--Zereshk 04:17, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- Actually (though you perhaps mean this) even better would be be to have the percentages of population by level of education completed broken down by by age, sex, region, etc., and to include the diaspora in a separate column (though the exact relation of the diaspora to Iran proper is, of course, as with diasporas in general, very ambiguous). This would give a better picture of the way the situation was evolving, as opposed to how it is now. With such a young population and probably a rapidly changing educational sociology, the educational levels of say, 20-30 year olds, and plans for 15 year olds are potentially more important statistics than they might be in a Western country with a more straight sided population pyramid and stable educational pattern.
- The UNESCO website at :http://stats.uis.unesco.org/unesco/TableViewer/document.aspx?ReportId=121&IF_Language=eng&BR_Country=3640 gives the following statistics for Irani Tertiary education:
- In 2006, which is the most recent year given, 27% of the population of tertiary educational age were in tertiary educational programmes, up from 19% in both 1999 and 2002. This suggests that that the recent increase in oil revenues was to some degree put into higher education.
- A breakdown of the sex ratio of the tertiary educational students shows it to be fairly even, and with the percentage of females in tertiary education, having caught up to that of males ca. 2002, now slowly surpassing them (2006 28% F, v. 25% M.).
- Iran: Percentage in Tertiary Educational Programmes; 1999, 2002, and 2006 respectively.
- MF in Tertiary educations (%) 19% 19% 27%
- M in Tertiary educations (%) 21% 19% 25%
- F in Tertiary educations (%) 17% 19% 28%
- These statistics do not tell too much about the quality of Irani tertiary education and how it is developing. Comparative tertiary institution quality tends to be a somewhat difficult variable to measure; it may or may not be a significant factor in an appropriate interpretation of these statistics. A very, very, rough rule of thumb might be that a highly competitive entrance requirement in a country with a large population and high secondary school completion rate tends to result in "intelligent" and competent tertiary graduates, even if the institutional quality is not conventionally demonstrable to measure at the highest standard in terms of papers published by faculty, etc.
- If anyone wants to transfer any of this information to the main article after verfication, please feel free. I don't know how to format it properly, and don't want to do a mangled edit on the article page. --FurnaldHall (talk) 18:55, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
While admission into the medical schools is extremely competitive, I doubt the mentioned number (under 100) is correct for Tehran. The medical schools in Tehran together accept a lot more than 100 students in General medicine. Students with ranks 200-300 still have a chance. Also admission into other medical-related fields (nursery, Dentistry, Pharmacology etc) is easier. It could be changed to "under 300 for the MD programs in Tehran". Ghlobe 18:40, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think youre right about that.--Zereshk 05:01, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Ranking
editI don't think iritn is a good reference for the rankings. For ranking based on ISI papers and density w.r.t. faculty, check: http://www.ipm.ac.ir/IPM/homepage/WorldNews/11.pdf on page: http://www.ipm.ac.ir/IPM/homepage/worldnews.html from sharghnewspaper's (www.sharghnewspaper.com) 22/3/1385. even better is to find a reference in isna, MSRT's site, or irandoc.ac.ir.

Bans on women
editArticle does not mention bans of women from 77 BA degrees issued in August 2012. I think it should be included. Egeymi (talk) 20:29, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
year missing and unsubstantiated claim
edit"As of October 24 or 25th, the President of Iran has indicated that many college courses taught by Iranian Universities are too westernized and do not comply with Muslim law. Those courses may be changed radically to comply with Muslim law - or, they may be completely eliminated"
