Born where?
editWas he born in Hong Kong, China or the British colony of Hong Kong? Just a thought. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.196.147.198 (talk) 06:52, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hong Kong was in fact a British colony in 1976 when he was born. 24.8.125.248 (talk) 04:09, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
what kind of guitar.
editWhat type of guitar does Herman Li use and also what altercations does he use like jumbo frets, filed down frets, and others.
- He uses an Ibanez S Prestige, not sure on the exact model, but you can see it, and the details here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3jGFukH-Mo. Alas, I don't know if a youtube video is accepted as a proper source...
- This is a better answer to your question http://www.dragonforce.com/herman_li.php
Li struggles?
edit"Li often struggles to play his passages live."
Can we get some kind of proof, citation, or evidence of this? --K_R 16:56, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- I second that, I was at a DragonForce show yesterday in NYC, Nokia Theater, and his live passages were nearly flawless (and I was watching and listening carefully the whole time DF was on, too).
- Ahem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xbMjRD_qaY and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6IoAxx5ptc&mode=related&sear%20ch=
- There are other videos, including the full one on Google, that show both of them botching solo after solo. Also carefully scrutinize the picture-in-picture closeups of them shredding in their videos; it's clear that it was recorded at a slower rate and sped up by the movement of their hair and clothes' fabric. --- > It's a music video, you weren't actually under the influence that they were playing the song and that it wasn't edited over it were you?
- Ahh, the second link, you mean where he stops playing? Yup, botched that. First link? The harmonising does sound a tad off... Solo obviously isn't like the studio version, but I doubt any show would be just like the studio. But two videos doesn't mean often; I think it's rather redundant to say he has good and bad days like everybody else, especially if there's only two videos. What about every other show they've done? --Dayn 10:18, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Every video I've seen of them playing live has been appalling, the guys not in key with himselflet alone the rest of the band, and take a look at the "betcha can't play this" from guitar world on youtube, as one person commented, "it should be named 'betcha cant play this cos we cant either'"...
- I think they were drunk then. I notice Sam Totman's page mentions how according to some people, it seems to affect their playing. --Dayn 14:15, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
I wish they would stop pretending to be sloppy because of drink. NO ONE gets drunk on one Bud , honestly. Fan boys need to accept this —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.1.139.63 (talk) 15:21, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- Just because the average person can't hear his sloppiness doesn't mean it doesn't exist. People who are acclimated to the sounds of shred guitar can tell quite easily that his playing is overwrought with guitar effects and vaguely sloppy. Of course, nobody of note has gone on record saying this so I suppose it'll have to wait to get put into wikipedia. Might I suggest a "Criticisms" section in the main article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.168.252.17 (talk) 10:18, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- I've seen just as many videos of him nailing solos. I'm not some noob fanboy, I play guitar in a speed metal band, I know what i'm talking about. and one is expected to be sloppy live. you can't make all of the same articulations live and going that fast you're going st screw some stuff up. really it's just gotten really popular to hate/dislike/mock Herman since Dragonforce got to be a big deal. it was funny to watch guys go from saying that herman li was the greatest to herman li sucks around the time Inhuman Rampage came out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.3.119.78 (talk) 04:31, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, it is true Herman li is considered as one of the most famous guitarists

in our days. And yes, if you've seen the music video of "Through the fires and flames", believe me, YOU would have some comments!.... The first thing you understand is that his hands move/sweep so fast that it's even hard to follow. And, it gets really different when it comes to the "LIVE" version of their songs. Well, some says that studio version and the live version cannot be exactly the same. Yeah...yeah....it is true... however, does that mean that anyone could just record a sloppy guitar sound in studio - edit it perfectly and just...be one of the most well-known guitarists? i say no.....I don't mean that he sucks or anything but come on.. you could see his "sloppiness". It's there.. can't ignore it.
Virtuoso?
editI've been wondering; is Herman Li considered a virtuoso? Personally, I don't think so at all. Has he actually demonstrated his virtuosity of the guitar? What would be required to be a virtuoso and would he fit the bill?
Thoughts? --Dayn 07:45, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
While I'm at it, compare him to the likes of Satriani and Vai. All three can play fast; but can Li match them in terms of compositional ability, improvisation, and technical mastery? As much as I like his playing, I can't say he's a virtuoso, just good at playing fast and fun. --Dayn 07:56, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. There is no way that Li can match ranks with guys like Vai, Shawn Lane, Holdsworth, Satriani, Petrucci, Gilbert, etc - Wade
Anybody can get up to speed on any instrumentmith practice which is exactly what Li did, he doesn't really have anything he is known for besides his speed but that is only because a single song of his was displayed in popular culture with almost every single one of those out there hearing this song never having heard the likes of Michael Angelo Batio and others. --68.177.37.202 (talk) 17:42, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
COMPLEX HARMONIES?
editAll the harmony solos I've heard (which are a few) never deviate from thirds or octaves which are the most basic harmonies you can get, there are no polyphonic or contrapuntal textures in his solo either which ultimately means FAIL!!!
- I believe it means the solos themselves are complex with harmony, not implying the harmonising is complex.--Dayn 02:30, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well whoever wrote the article should have used a comma, makes a huge difference... or maybe even used a more specific term--88.106.187.25 02:40, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with the change to technical, makes more sense. --Dayn 08:48, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Trivia
editI removed the trivia section, as all it has is "Herman Li is oriental." which is blatantly obvious, given that it says he was born in Hong Kong, and it has his picture there as well. If there was something trivia-wise, go for it and add it. --Dayn 04:00, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- See, and I here I was about to add "Has a devoted following of people that take every opportunity to mention Li is either Asian, Chinese, Oriental, or something other than Caucasian" :P T1g4h 14:24, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Report
editIm doing a report on Herman Li. I need to know how many notes per second he can play. so if anyone can tell me just leave a post. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.35.241.181 (talk) 03:21, 22 January 2007 (UTC).
- It'll forever be unconfirmed; you'll have to ask him himself, but people can always improve, depending on what techniques they use. But, assuming he does 32nd note tapping at 200bpm...
- 4/4 time
- 200 beats per minute
- 4 beats = 1 semibrieve
- 200/4 = 50 semibrieves per minute
- 50 semibrieves * 4 = 200 crotchets per minute
- 200 crochets * 4 = 800 16ths per minute
- 800 16th * 2 = 1600 32nds per minute
- 1600/60 = 26.6~ notes per second, apparently.
- Of course, they hardly play that fast ALL the time; at best, he'd play around half that usually, since :tapping basically gets in double the amount of notes. --Dayn 03:32, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Guitar Tricks
editCould someone explain what a "drum riser spin bounce" and a "whammy bar lift guitar slam" are? VikingofRock 01:01, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- I went to a DragonForce show today (on tour with He is Legend, Chimaira, KsE). A move that Herman kept doing that appears to be a "whammy bar lift guitar slam" is lifting the guitar up so that its front is parallel to the floor while hitting a pinch-harmonic and lifting up the whammy bar at the same time. You can see Herman do it at the 1:05 mark of the video that was posted above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xbMjRD_qaY Sean 07:26, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Couldn't afford a guitar?
editI was just at a Dragonforce signing, and I talked to Herman about the page, and he said "It's full of shit" and "lies". Specifically, he mentioned that he COULD afford a left handed guitar, but he CHOSE not to buy one. So yeah, should we change that or something? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 58.108.81.80 (talk) 13:12, 11 May 2007 (UTC).

"harmonized solo passages"
editIsn't "harmonized solo" an oxymoron..? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.46.1.184 (talk) 22:19, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Not neccesarily solos sometimes need to make sense which involves harmonising without harmony a guitar solo or any solo for that matter is just random notes that really don't make any sense at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.177.37.202 (talk) 17:37, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- a true solo is an unaccompanied piece, (one instrument) so really what we usually call a guitar solo isn't a guitar solo at all. what we call a guitar solo is really a series of melodies that do not repeat like a rythem riff or theme would. they do tend to make sense unless they clash with the tonal key. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.3.119.78 (talk) 04:41, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

A FockeWulf as guitar
editI've never heard of a FockeWulf guitar, I only know it are german WW2 fighters. Removed this 'guitar'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.26.2.114 (talk) 09:43, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Deleted entire article...
editSomeone deleted the entire article... It should be restored or rewritten, so I restored it to the last version (with the full article) and it should be temporarily locked so this doesn't happen again.
The article, more specifically was replaced with "Herman Li sucks" and that was what was left of it, so I'll restore it to what it was. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fishdert (talk • contribs) 01:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Melodic Metal...!?
editAny citations or what? Somehow I can't believe a whole new style of metal suddenly appeared there. Anybody care to explain? --116.12.228.194 (talk) 05:58, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Mega-man not Pac-man
editThe video game music played in Through the Fire and Flames is not from Pac-man, it's from Mega-man. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.48.130.33 (talk) 15:37, 18 February 2009 (UTC) =Well,on youtube, you could find some of the video clips of him interviewing. And he was the one who called that noise as "Pacman noise". So, if you're really bothered about the fact that it's not from pacman...? -_- well...i guess you could be like the only one who calls it a "mega-man noise" But probabaly nobody would bother to care. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.153.45.138 (talk) 10:26, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Black Metal?
editDragonforce isn't even close to black metal, so how is Li associated with black metal?--69.208.75.76 (talk) 21:58, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- One of his former bands was black metal. – Richard BB 22:27, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
