Sepals not petals?
editQuoting the article: "The flowers have five "petals" (actually sepals) surrounding a ring of small, cup-like nectaries (petals modified to hold nectar). The sepals do not fall as petals would, but remain on the plant, sometimes for many months."
Please, how do we know that the "petals" of Hellebores are actually sepals modified to look like petals? Is the reason that the alternative "explanation", that Hellebores lack sepals entirely and have evolved two types of petals, the outer ones large and showy, the inner ones modified to hold nectar, is so much more complicated and therefore unlikely?
Or are they sepals BECAUSE they remain on the plant and do not fall? C7nel (talk) 22:09, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
